Overview

Learn to surf on Waikiki Beach. Travel to the beach in an air-conditioned Mercedes Benz van and then participate in a brief a safety training and learn the basics of popping up and balancing before jumping in the water. Get one-on-one instruction and learn surfing essentials with a team of experienced teachers. This 2-hour semi-private lesson includes the use of all gear, and the option to purchase professional photos, videos taken during the day, and surfing swag if you choose.

Pickup details

We offer free pickup from Waikiki from our four standard pickup locations 10-45 minutes prior to your lesson time: (1) Ilikai Hotel (2) Ambassador Hotel (3) Don Ho Lane Van Depot (4) Hyatt Regency For customers staying at the Ala Moana Hotel, Hale Koa Hotel, Kahala Hotel and Resort, The Ritz Carlton or The Trump Hotel, we may be able to arrange a special pickup closer to the hotel with a notification call or email at least 24 hours in advance. If either the customer or accompanying guest has a handicap or injury and needs to arrange a special pickup, please call or email us with 24 hours notice and we are more than happy to come directly to your hotel.

  • 2 participant minimum required to book. Participants must be 13 or older and able to swim.
  • If any participants cannot swim, please advise the staff ahead of time as a private lesson may be required.
  • If any participants have medical conditions or injuries, please advise the staff ahead of time
  • If you are prone to seasickness, you may want to take a remedy you are accustomed to using before the lesson (talk to your doctor for recommendations).

  • All of our written materials are also available in Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. We will do our best to accommodate, but cannot guarantee, Japanese, Korean, Spanish or Chinese speaking-instructors without enough advance notice.
  • Complimentary transportation is available from select locations in Waikiki. Exact pick-up location and time will be emailed to you by the supplier. If you do not receive these details 24 hours prior to your lesson, please contact Ohana Surf Project.
  • Most travellers can participate

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

  • For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

Fun Waikiki Surfing

We had an awesome time surfing through this booking. We were picked up very close to our hotel in their van ahead of the lesson. At the start, we received a brief safety training followed by some on-shore stretches and instruction. We then quickly headed into the water with our guide (1 guide for every 2 or 3 person group). Most of us had never surfed before but it seemed like everyone was able to get up and ride the waves! Friendly staff, beautiful day and very fun way to spend an afternoon.

There were too many people trying to surf at one time, which lead to people surfing into each other. My girlfriend got hurt due to this. She got hit by two other surfers and now has a shoulder and neck injury. When buying pictures, make sure you look all of them before purchasing, as I got only a couple of myself not even getting up on the board.

Highly recommend Ohana Surf Project

We signed my son and his friend(both 20) up for surf lessons in Waikiki. This was our sons 2020 HS graduation trip that we finally were able to take so we wanted to make it special. Surfing in Waikiki was on his bucket list. They had done a couple of lessons while we were in Maui and wanted my husband and I to join their lesson in Waikiki. Always up for a challenge, I added my husband and I on and off we went From their help getting us switched from semi-private lesson to family lesson, to the drop off back at the hotel I cannot recommend Ohana Surf Project enough! My husband and I had never surfed(and I may add we are grandparents). They were kind and encouraging and I got up on the third try and never looked back! So much fun! Just goes to show you are never to old to start! Thanks Ohana Surf Project for an amazing and memorable experience!!

This was a great experience! They provide a long sleeve rash guard and water shoes. Matt was our instructor and he was fantastic! The views from the water can’t be beat. Both my husband and I were able to ride a few waves thanks to the great instructor!

Awesome experience for beginners with friendly instructors

My aunt and I enjoyed our lesson with "K". He was friendly, helpful, and encouraging as it was our first time ever surfing. His patience with us made the experience great as we were new and confused. The photographer, Mark, was also very encouraging and fun. Overall we had a wonderful 2 hours in what basically felt like a private lesson because it was just us and "K" the entire time. I would 100 percent go back to this surfing company and recommend to family and friends.

This was one of the best experiences I’ve had while in Oahu. The staff (namely Claire and Chelsea - our instructor) were absolutely phenomenal. From the morning pick up to the lesson before we headed out to surf and the instruction and encouragement while on the water, they truly make you feel like you are ohana. As this was my first time ever surfing I was a bit scared to do it in the beginning but everyone is so knowledgeable and patient and immediately put me at ease. I had nothing to worry about and had the best time - even better, I stood up on the board and actually surfed waves! If you’re here on the island, don’t leave without learning how to surf with this crew - you won’t regret it. I’m absolutely coming back to continue to sharpen my surfing skills and hang out with this team, they’re an absolute blast!

Our experience surfing with Ohana surf project was incredible. The instructors are all very friendly and helpful and really want to ensure a good experience for all students. We booked the two hour lesson and were very confident by the end of it, despite never having surfed before. Would recommend to anyone.

My husband and I were so excited to try out surfing!! Hughes was our instructor and he was amazing!! He made the experience so much fun and did a great job of explaining the steps - we were able to stand up on the first wave!! This was our favorite experience in Hawaii! Ohana Surf Project is the best!! They had everything you needed- shoes, surf shirts, and even had someone out surfing with a go-pro so you get the coolest photos!!! They go over all of the safety procedures before getting in the water and then teach you on land before moving into the water. If you’re considering doing surfing lessons, definitely pick Ohana Surf Project!! THE BEST EXPERIENCE!!!!

Our instructors were awesome. They made sure we were safe at all times and let us go at our own pace. They were friendly, patient, informative, and all around just nice people. They didn't push us to buy anything after the lesson. I'm glad I went with Ohana Surf Project to learn how to surf. If you are looking to learn how to surf, I highly recommend them.

To the driver from the hotel to the instructors, everyone was super nice, patient, and helpful! They were quick to get you on point to learn to surf, with how you were standing, or getting up on the board. On top of teaching us to surf, they also had lots of recommendations on things to do on our visit here! Matt did photography and he was awesome! I unfortunately can't remember anyone else's name but the lady instructor was nice and the trainee under her was cool as well! Our driver was the best! Everyone was super awesome 🤙🏻Mahalo! Will surf again would rate higher, if I could.
