Overview

Nothing is more iconic to Hawaii than surfing at Waikiki Beach. This is arguably the place where surfing was born, and the spot where watermen like Duke Kahanamoku helped introduce surfing to the world. The reason why this south facing coast is so perfect for learning to surf, is the fact that the bottom is soft, sandy, and the water is relatively shallow. During this surf lesson in Waikiki, you'll also notice the way the waves have a steady and gentle roll, which makes them far less intimidating than other waves on Oahu. Add in a long, stable board and a professional local instructor, and before you know it you'll be surfing a wave like ancient Hawaiians of old.

AMAZING experience. Highly recommend to anyone looking to learn how to surf. Instructors were patient with us all and helpful, to include giving you a break from paddling. I was able to catch waves over and over and over again. You will only get out of it what you put in, but the instructors are happy to help you keep trying to catch those waves. I would definitely come back over and over again.

Our kids did the lessons - the range in age from 11-17 - and had a great time. I wish there would have been a 3rd instructor due to the size of the group but it was safe and the 2 they had were great. They spent a solid hour out in the ocean which we thought was great. The only thing I didn’t love and honestly this has nothing to do with the crew & more so the waves, was the distance from the shore to observe.

This surfing experience was fantastic! Small group and great teachers meant we were able to get individual lessons and feedback. Instructors really cared that each person had a good experience. Each person in our group was able to stand up and surf by the end. Surfing will change your perspective of the ocean. Totally recommend this experience in Hawaii!

I live in Guam, and have had interest in surfing but never tried. My boyfriend pushed me and now this is my second lesson and I am feeling so much more confident. The instructor was very patient and pointed out mistakes in posture, balance and offered positive feedback on how to improve. Think I will be ready to purchase a board after my next lesson or two

If you want to try surfing for the first time, this is the way to go. Paul was an awesome teacher, very patient, cool personality. Both my gf and I were able to catch some small waves within 20min of our first lesson.

The whole team was great! The lessons were very clear. It was a little tricky at first, but I was staying up on my board by the end of it! Had a blast! My whole body was sore afterwards. I think the only thing that could’ve made it better is a lesson on paddle technique. I was paddling like crazy and going no where fast, which I believe is because I wasn’t doing it correctly. Otherwise it was a blast and I would definitely recommend it!

Pauley was an exceptional instructor. He explained everything in a clear and simple way. We were able to practice in the shop getting up on the board before going out. After every wave he reviewed what we did well and how we could improved. It was an amazing time! Would definitely do this again.

Seriously, our favorite excursion while honeymooning in Hawaii. The crew at Big Dave’s was so friendly and extremely helpful. We felt safe and well-informed. It was truly like we were out learning to surf with a group of friends. We had a small group of 5 people, with 3 instructors (one who doubled as a videographer). We had initially opted out of buying the video package, but after seeing the captured footage, we were eager to purchase it. Everyone in our group had equal opportunity to catch waves, and we truly felt like our instructors cared about us having an enjoyable experience. Mahalo to this excursion and it’s crew!

Lee was a very thorough instructor and great surf cowboy, herding all the novices with expert care. The man can tow you out with his toes , grabbing your board with them! Nice beginner waves at the location. I was successful in standing and surfing. So worth it!
