I waited a week to write this review until after we had other tours to make sure I wasn't being unfair to our guide. After experiences with four additional guides, I can truthfully say that our Hidden Gems and Highlights tour was even worse than I thought. The guide did meet us on time at our hotel. He did not make a good first impression, however, because he appeared disheveled, and we had to ask him to go over the itinerary he'd planned based on our answers to the City Unscripted Survey. We asked him to take out a boat tour about half way through his planned itinerary as we already had one scheduled. Other than that, it was a vague description of seeing the Saint Germain, where we were staying, the Marais, and Montparnasse. It quickly became obvious that our guide wanted to take us on a wine shop tour, which is his specialty. He showed us a few other things, but in Saint-Germain, it was mainly wine shops that we stopped into, while we tried to steer him toward other things we were interested in, including a church he pointed out as the oldest in Paris. I asked if we could visit, as it was two block from where we were standing, but he waved us off, saying there was nothing of interest, while taking us toward a chocolate shop. It was close to noon, and we were getting hungry. A seafood restaurant he suggested in Saint Germain was crowded, so he said, let's go to the Marais. We had an enjoyable lunch at the restaurant he pointed out, and he did help us order. We learned nothing else about the Marais. He then told us we had a choice. He could take us back to the hotel or we could go to Montparnasse and to the top of the tower there--and then take a taxi back to our hotel. We chose the latter, hoping to salvage the tour. We took a bus to Montparnasse, and he did have tickets for the two of us, which was helpful, but I couldn't get him to tell me how to buy tickets for ourselves so we could do it later in the trip. At Montparnasse, he took us straight to the modern tower, pointed out the elevator to the top and showed us the taxi stand. He then left. No background on Montparnasse or recommendations for other things to see. We paid for six hours, but he left after five. That's all right. We were tired of him. Overall, we learned a few good things about wine, but our tour didn't correspond at all to what we expected to have. He may be a great guide for food and wine tours, but an overview of highlights and hidden gems--no. I will note that this is the first negative review I've ever written. I much prefer to praise people for a job well done. But I decided to go ahead and write this to help the tour company make good decisions about whom to assign to tours and to keep other individuals from wasting precious days in Paris, not to mention a tidy little sum of money.
