So they canceled it, but never told us. So, kind of a long story. We booked the private family guided tour for our family of five for the Catacombs months in advance. Apparently, the Catacombs changed their policy and no longer allow third party tours. But Viator and the company that was to actually provide the guide never told us this. We were charged for the full amount, and even got a confirmation email the day of the event saying all was well.
We show up to the meeting point - which is nowhere near the catacombs I might add - no one is there. We give the benefit of the doubt, it was raining. But after ten minutes, it was apparent that we were in the correct location, but no one was coming. We tried to message through the app, but no one responded.
They don't make it easy to find a phone number, but eventually we did - it was buried in the fine print - called, and were told that it was canceled. All news to us obviously. Absolutely livid. And all this nearing 5 pm on a Friday.
I guess it worked out. We were able to get a taxi across town to the Catacombs. The tickets for the adults bought through the guide were sent to us electronically, but for some reason we had to buy the children' tickets separately on arrival.
Anyway, we made it to the catacombs. We were able to visit with self-guided audio guides, and had enough time that we didn't feel too rushed before they closed. But the kids didn't enjoy listening to the boxes, and I think the experience of a live guide would have been much more engaging for the kids.
We didn't get the benefit of the guide, which was the whole point, and it was quite harried and stressful since we were only in Paris for a short visit and tickets were sold out online.
It really puts me off trying to use third party guides - too many middlemen. Communication was severely lacking - everything said that all was confirmed and fine, when clearly it wasn't. And the policy change didn't just happen the day before - there were weeks were we could have been notified and made different arrangements. The tour company employee that answered - once we found a number - was nice, professional and understanding, but at the end of the day, it was preventable, stressful for the kids, and me, and not necessary.
They did refund for the full amount, and promptly I will add, which at nearly $850 US, it wasn't cheap to begin with.
Now I'm rambling, but we are much less likely to consider using Viator in the future. We still had a good time, and would recommend the Catacombs, but book direct.
