So they canceled it, but never told us....

So they canceled it, but never told us. So, kind of a long story. We booked the private family guided tour for our family of five for the Catacombs months in advance. Apparently, the Catacombs changed their policy and no longer allow third party tours. But Viator and the company that was to actually provide the guide never told us this. We were charged for the full amount, and even got a confirmation email the day of the event saying all was well. We show up to the meeting point - which is nowhere near the catacombs I might add - no one is there. We give the benefit of the doubt, it was raining. But after ten minutes, it was apparent that we were in the correct location, but no one was coming. We tried to message through the app, but no one responded. They don't make it easy to find a phone number, but eventually we did - it was buried in the fine print - called, and were told that it was canceled. All news to us obviously. Absolutely livid. And all this nearing 5 pm on a Friday. I guess it worked out. We were able to get a taxi across town to the Catacombs. The tickets for the adults bought through the guide were sent to us electronically, but for some reason we had to buy the children' tickets separately on arrival. Anyway, we made it to the catacombs. We were able to visit with self-guided audio guides, and had enough time that we didn't feel too rushed before they closed. But the kids didn't enjoy listening to the boxes, and I think the experience of a live guide would have been much more engaging for the kids. We didn't get the benefit of the guide, which was the whole point, and it was quite harried and stressful since we were only in Paris for a short visit and tickets were sold out online. It really puts me off trying to use third party guides - too many middlemen. Communication was severely lacking - everything said that all was confirmed and fine, when clearly it wasn't. And the policy change didn't just happen the day before - there were weeks were we could have been notified and made different arrangements. The tour company employee that answered - once we found a number - was nice, professional and understanding, but at the end of the day, it was preventable, stressful for the kids, and me, and not necessary. They did refund for the full amount, and promptly I will add, which at nearly $850 US, it wasn't cheap to begin with. Now I'm rambling, but we are much less likely to consider using Viator in the future. We still had a good time, and would recommend the Catacombs, but book direct.
    Very unique experience

Great way to see the catacombs - you get the extra stories, skip the line and get to go to special places that regular tourists won't. Alberto was excellent and kept the kids very engaged.
    Fun for all!

We had a great time! Our guide, Raphaëlle, was very knowledgeable and kept the kids engaged for the whole tour. We even got to visit 2 areas that were not open to the public! She not only provided us with the history of the catacombs, but enlightened us with information on the history of Paris and the underground world in the city today.
    Great tour for the family

Raphaelle was excellent. She was very knowledgeable, funny, and great at engaging our 7 and 10 year old.
    Catacombs are a must see

Helene was an incredible tour guide. Very knowledgeable, funny and kept engaging with our son. She had detailed history and stories that helped the catacombs come alive. The explanation of why and how the skeletons arrived there make the experience really beautiful. Nothing to get “creeped” for the kids.

The lady was nice and knew a lot about the Catacombs of Paris. We have also visited some secret parts of the Catacombs.
    Great tour for our family

Wonderful tour! Our guide made it so fun for all of us, especially the kids! Loved that we had access to more areas of the catacombs because we had a guide.
    Great tour, worth the money

We had Tatiana as our tour guide for 3 tours during our time in Paris. We were 4 adults and 2 kids (age 11). This was such an interesting and fun tour that all enjoyed especially the kids. We got to skip the line which was well worth the money.
A good time and a wonderful guide

This was the second tour (in the same day) we had with Tatiana. She had also brought us through the Louvre, and there the 10yo was far more engaged than on this tour. Part of it was the subject material, with our 10yo being a bit more reserved especially on the initial stages. However here our 12yo, who was much more reserved during the Louvre tour, engaged far more right from the start. As in the Louvre tour she had much to add. Unlike the Louvre tour she didn't have to chide someone pointing at a delicate painting with (*EEK*) an umbrella. All in all she had everyone, including my wife and I (our first visit to the catacombs) engaged. I can recommend this tour, and Tatiana as a guide.
    Great Tour!

This tour allowed us to skip a three-hour long line and go right in. The guide took us into places that were not open to the general public. I highly recommend this experience.
