What To Expect

Meet your knowledgeable guide at street level and prepare for this guided tour of the Paris Catacombs. Head down 130 steps to reach the intricate network of tunnels, and follow your guide through what can be a confusing labyrinth.

Hear stories about how the Paris Catacombs were built as a massive underground cemetery, housing the bones of roughly six million people since the 18th century. Paris' dead were moved en masse from existing cemeteries to the Catacombs from 1786 to 1788. By the early 19th century, the Catacombs had already started to attract tourist attention.

You have plenty of chances to ask questions of your guide as you walk through the tunnels. It's a unique opportunity to see a side of Paris most people miss.

After touring the Catacombs, the tour comes to an end back at street level when you climb back up the stairs where you started the tour.

This tour is not wheelchair accessible; there are 130 steps below ground to enter the Catacombs and 83 steps to climb up to exit, and there is no elevator
Not advisable for anyone with cardiac or respiratory weakness, nervous disease or tendencies towards claustrophobia
Not advisable for infants or young children
No restrooms or cloakrooms at the Catacombs
The temperature remains at 57°F (14°C) inside the Catacombs; dressing warmly is recommended

Note it's a spiral staircase to go down and up, also it's dusty/wet in the catacombs so wear appropriate shoes.

Since the facility can only accommodate 200 people at once, the wait can be long.

This tour is worth the time and money as you get to see certain parts of the catacombs that you don't get to see on a self guided tour.

This is a unique experience. We toured 2 km of the 200km underground tunnels, all packed with human bones and skulls. Our guide not only gave us the history of it all but had many interesting stories, such as the underground workers who made art displays in the tunnel out of the bones and skulls. If you are in Paris, and you are not claustrophobic, and/or you don't have mobility issues, you must take this tour. Lots of stairs and narrow tunnels.

We went to the catacombs, but our guy never showed up. So we ended up going in and buying tickets, and took the tour without a guide. I’m sure that it would have been better if we had a guide. And the fact that I paid for a tour, and then had to pay again just to get in was very irritating.

We paid 190 euro only to get there and fond that there was no scheduled tour in English and that our tickets were invalid. We ended up having to pay another 28 euro to go into the Catacombs, and the counter let us know that they’ve seen many Viator scams amongst Americans as of late. Horrible experience.

When we arrived with our paid tickets at the catacombs they would NOT accept our paperwork and we had to pay again to get in. We tried calling the numbers given us and NO one answered would I recommend viator NOT ON YOUR LIFE.
