What To Expect

If you’re departing from Perth, your Rottnest Island day trip starts with the ferry ride along the Swan River, which takes you past luxurious homes and yacht clubs on the water. When you arrive in Fremantle, pick up more passengers; if you select the Fremantle option when booking, you’ll board the ferry here. Then speed across the Indian Ocean to reach the island. As you disembark from the ferry, pick up your included bike rental from the friendly crew.

Known to locals as Rotto, the island is beloved for its tranquil, relaxing environment, due largely to its no-cars-allowed policy. Explore the island independently; You might like to settle on one of the 20 bays and 63 secluded beaches or perhaps visit the iconic Wadjemup or Bathurst Lighthouses. Choose to visit attractions such as Lomas Cottage, Rottenest Island Museum or Pilot Boathouse. You might like to ride to the West End where you can stroll along the boardwalk admiring coastal views and lookout for seals at Cathedral Rocks and keep your eyes peeled for humback whales - late September - November. When you stop for breaks, make sure to keep your eyes open for quokkas, the local marsupials who call the island home.

Your trip ends with the return ferry ride to Fremantle or Perth.

It was raining and bumpy. Staff was nice but there is no information and a bit expensive just for transport.
Wonderful day out

Absolutely amazing day out on a beautiful island. Had the best time biking around and seeing the sights. Gorgeous scenery and wildlife. The quokkas are incredibly cute.
Simple and great

I chose the option to board the ferry in Fremantle itself. Ticket collection was simple and smooth. It's a short walk from Fremantle station to B-Shed. Note that B-Shed is under construction at the time of writing this review. Look for Rottnest Express ticketing counter in red near E-Shed Markets to exchange for ferry tickets. Instructions given by ticketing staff was clear and concise. Boarding of ferry is located near B-Shed, with a tall signboard that shows Rottnest Express. Bicycle comes with a helmet and lock. Return trip was straightforward as well, just return the bike to the ferry staff and off you go!
Quokka, quokka, quokka!!
Sara_J, July 2023
We loved the Quokka! Seeing the rare marsupials and their babies was so special. The Island, beaches and wildlife is quite the adventure. We decided to take the bikes even though it was a bit rainy, but it was a great choice. It felt like we had the island to ourselves. Have a picnic, or grab a bite at the pub. I don’t think you can go wrong. The tour through the river was also nice. We learned a lot about the history of Perth.
Unique Experience Worth the Time!

Very enjoyable day exploring Rottnest! Knowledgeable tour guide on boat, great bikes, cutest wildlife (quokkas and birds), beautiful scenery. Only downside was rocky waters on the way there, causing some sea sickness.
Having a bike to explore Rottnest Island was totally the right decision
Fiona_N, July 2023
Having a bike to explore Rottnest Island was totally the right decision. I found the quay and collected my ticket easily and enjoyed the journey to the island interesting and informative as there was a knowledgeable tour guide on board. On arrival at Rottnest Island bikes and compulsory helmets were issued and the return time for boarding made clear. I realised thee would not be enough time for me to cycle around the entire island and spend time exploring locations so I decided cycle to Henrietta Rocks with my packed lunch and then to head to the Wadjemup Lighthouse and to ride north and to return alongside the lakes and the north coast. The Rottnest Island Visitor Centre was really interesting and I enjoyed the special art exhibition and meeting my first Quokka just outside beside the bike racks!

Rottnest was a beautiful island and getting around on bike is the perfect way to see it! The food was good. I wish we had some more time!

Beautiful day to see coastal views & quokkas
Audra_K, June 2023
Beautiful island to discover throughout the day! Bicycles make it much easier to cover as much territory as you’d like. The island is a bit hillier than expected and unfortunately the rental bikes aren’t of the best quality. My gears slipped the whole day and the shifter was rusted through. I should have checked this better before accepting the bike and asked for another one. Hopefully this serves as a helpful reminder for someone else!
Sun, Beaches & Quokkas
Trevor_P, June 2023
Booked a last minuted trip to Rottnest through Viator. It was a smooth transaction and the fee included the ferry ride, bike rental and entrance fee to the island. I had a fantastic time cycling the island and taking in the sights and sounds. Bring lotsa water and plan your route so that you'll be near the settlements during lunch time.
Great Day on the Island
Lynne_M, Apr 2023
Great way to see the Island. Even the hills were not that hard. So easy to just get your bike from the boat once landed and to drop it back just before departure. Would recommend
Beautiful island with cute friends
Colin_C, Apr 2023
Quokka were very entertaining. Seamless tour ran like clockwork. Sign posting on the island left a bit to be desired!
Fun experience
Casey_H, Apr 2023
Bike tracks for all capabilities with beautiful scenery along the way, short boat ride to the island too
Ride the ferry, skip the cycles.
Christopher_C, Mar 2023
Excellent ferry ride and presenter commentary, yet unfortunately dismal bicycle rentals. The whole cycle fleet needs to a complete overhaul, then regular maintenance. Book your ferry ride with Rottenest Express, just rent cycles elsewhere.
Fantastic day out 🙂
Derek_C, Mar 2023
Fantastic day out 🙂. Hire bicycle 🚲 to See more of the island. Snorkeling to enjoy the marine life. Thoroughly recommended.
Great day out

Good if the weather is good. We were lucky. I loved riding the bikes. Boat left on time. Good to take a picnic.
Great Ferry and Island, terrible bikes
Sheryl_I, Feb 2023
The ferry was excellent and the island was well worth a visit. But the bikes from Rottnest Express are terrible. Corroded from sea spray in the ferry. The gears don’t work, and slip frequently while pedalling making it difficult to go up the hills. I strongly recommend that you rent bikes from the company on the island. They are in excellent condition, have a basket for your backpack and a person is available if you need help.

Next time opt for an ebike the hills can be killers, but the beaches and views are spectacular. Take a lot of water
Lovely trip to a beautiful island
ruth_b, Feb 2023
The beaches and scenery are both stunning and of course the quokkers make it special. The trip over was good and the bikes handed out were OK if a little worn in the brakes and tyres. Cycle paths and directions are good on the island. The only negative was that unbeknownst to ourselves we have been booked on the early return ferry and there was no availability to change, so a shorter day than we would have liked.
