Begin your experience with convenient pickup at your Rio hotel, then transfer to Rocinha, Brazil's largest favela.

Meet your local guide, a favela resident, and set off through community on foot. Learn about daily life in the favela and the challenges that residents face. Hear about the history of the favela and how these communities have become a large part of the culture of Rio.

The price of your tour includes a monetary contribution to the community.

Please note: We are sensitive to the issues and concerns surrounding favelas; we understand that this tour may not be suitable for everyone. The purpose of this tour is for educational reasons alone and allows for a better understanding of local life.

Very informative tour with a guide who lives in the favela. Carlos had very good English and a deep knowledge of the favela and their history in Brazil. Regardless of what you hear online, this particular favela is safe. I actually felt safer here than walking around other parts of Rio. So many people and friendly smiling faces.

Very interesting and good experince. Nice, welcoming people and felt extremly safe. Would have liked to see some criminals with weapons but I can understand that it wasn´t possible :) However we saw a few "look outs".

We were picked up promptly from our hotel and driven to the favela, where the group was split into 2 smaller groups of about 10 to take the tour. Our guide was Carlos who was extremely knowledgeable and made everyone feel safe and comfortable in his community. There are a lot of narrow steps to negotiate but the group stayed together and waited for the stragglers and those taking photographs. We finished the tour in a local bar where everyone bought drinks and ice creams from the local shop. Although I originally had reservations about taking this tour I am so glad I did it and can thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting Rio.

We all know that it can really be challenging to walk in Rocinha and that is one of the reasons why we recommend everyone to wear comfortable shoes and be aware of uneven steps and narrow alleys. Alberto is a local guy who has lived in Rocinha for his entire life. He is animated and has a deep love for his neighborhood. He took our group through the narrow streets and staircases and gave us a glimpse of how life in the favela was. I felt very safe the entire time. This was by far the best tour I took in Rio. I absolutely recommend this tour to everyone who visits! Requires lots of stairs and walking on uneven and tight surfaces.

I really appreciated the Rocinha Favela walking tour and my guide, Carlos. Carlos explained that he was actually a resident and seemed to know the locals. It was important to me to be able support the community upon which I was intruding. Carlos was very insightful and provided his viewpoints on life in Brazil. I never felt unsafe (except for the driving, which is scary all throughout Rio) and was able to take pictures frequently. I wish I would have had more of an opportunity to buy from the local vendors. I would recommend this tour.
