Mixups, exhaustion and boredom

While our guide was clearly knowledgeable and well-meaning, this was not a good tour at all. First, we arrived on time (early as recommended) and were sent to the wrong place by one of the tour representatives. When we got to the office where he had sent us, they said we should have stayed where he was, but that by then our group was leaving so they put us in the next group, half an hour later. Then the tour itself: It was a hot, sunny day and our guide led us for two full hours around the Roman forum and other sites before ever making it to the Colosseum. She went on and on in a monotone voice, citing names of emperors and places and dates and numbers, all information that was hard to follow and recited as if read from a textbook. She wasn't engaging or funny or animated and, again, two hours walking in the heat before ever getting to the main attraction. With the crowds, the heat, the fatigue, the staticky headsets, everyone was fed up and it was hard to appreciate that we were finally there. At least half the group left before the end of the tour and in our little group of six we all removed our headsets long before the end because you couldn't follow half what she was saying anyway. And she went over the time by almost an hour; it was supposed to be and should have been two hours, not nearly three! I've been on some great tours in the past, with funny, passionate, engaging guides. The guide makes or breaks a tour, and unfortunately this one broke it.

Colosseum is the best

Our guide was very kind and he was a good shepherd of our group. However, we did not get the exact tour we wanted. We wanted just the fast track tour and instead got the 3 hour tour. We did not need to see the palatine hill. It can be skipped. And the forum tour could be abbreviated. The real show is the colosseum. That is what people really want to see. But I appreciate the tour getting us into these places and skipping the line (sort of-you still have to wait in the group entrance line!). So in short, I’d suggest making the tour a bit shorter and more focused in n the highlights.

Absolutely fantastic experience and the guide was great. Super informative without being too chatty. I was just super glad to have gotten in to see the colosseum seeing as how difficult it was getting passes. The starting organization could use a little work (our time was changed and the meeting spot also changed) but it all worked out in the end. Terrific company and would recommend. 👍👍

Could not understand the guide at all even though she was English speaking. The Palatine Hill and Roman Forum portion could be skipped, walked through and just read the signs in front of the different items. Once we got into the Colosseum, about ten of us ditched the guide and just wakes through ourselves.

Fast track: Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Tour was too “fast track”. Too much crammed into a few hours. Not good with kids. Hurried and more strenuous than expected, trying to keep up with the guide rapidly going up hills and stairs, often on uneven ground. Ir the palatine were omitted and the pace slowed a bit the tour would be much more enjoyable

It was very long, stretched out, the same information was presented over and over again. The whole tour could take an hour and a half. It took almost three hours. Very disorganized. In the beginning they told us that kids must have passports with them, this information was not specified on Viator. I would not recommend this tour to my friends.

Our tour guide was excellent. She was very knowledgeable on the Colosseum and the Forum. We gained good insight to both sites. Sadly, the intense heat of the day was to much for some of our group and we did leave early

Waste of our time

The check in process was good. However our guide was terrible. Half of the time he was talking about logistics and finding shade, the other half he was murmuring to himself. We couldn’t understand what he was talking about. His knowledge about the history was poor. He also managed time poorly. He didn’t give us enough time for taking photos at the palatine hill. We ended up showered up early at the colosseum. This tour completely wasted our time.

Must see this tour!

This tour is a must see. It’s crowded but you are outside and it is really cool. You need to buy a water bottle at the start though. Wear comfortable shoes and hat with sun glasses and sunscreen People with walking disability will had a hard time though. It’s an amazing piece of history. We loved it.

Disappointing rambling tour guide

The purple group from Crown, led by Marcel? was not very good. He talked nonstop, and most of the conversation was about marble and stone. There were tidbits that were interesting, but a lot of chattering filler that made the group tone out. By the end of the tour, more than half of the group had the earpieces out and he didn’t even notice. There was no overarching theme to the talk, and we had to read the signs to actually learn what we were walking by. We spent too much time in the Forum. In the Coliseum, so many fascinating things have happened, yet we learned a lot about tickets, gates, and stone. We took 7 Viator tours in Italy, and this was the only disaster. We were so disappointed and will take another tour with another company to learn more.

Juan Carlos / JC did a great job with showing us around and sharing his knowledge. I liked how he involves the group members by using them in his examples. He's subdued, so you have to pay active attention to what he's saying. Glad to have gone on a tour with an experienced guide (25+ years).
