What To Expect

Uncover secrets of daily life and folkloric legend in San Jose with this captivating evening tour. Connect with your guide at Morazán Park where we will learn post-colonial Costa Rican history. Your tour continues with a walk through San Jose’s historic streets to view architectural highlights in the glow of twilight. Stroll through Spain Park to view the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which boasts ties to Andrew Carnegie. You’ll also see the National Distillery and the striking metallic building at Morazán Park, constructed atop swamps in the 1800s. Finish your walk at a local artisan market inside the beautiful National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs. We’ll continue to charming Barrio Escalante, one of the oldest residential areas in San Jose. The "barrio" as locals call it, was first a coffee farm but by the 1950's became the favorite neighborhood for the economic and political elites of the time. Nowadays, Barrio Escalante has reinvented itself and is now home to many up and coming restaurants and at night is a favorite meeting spot for locals and visitors alike.

The evening will end with a contemporary traditional meal at a hip local restaurant that is very popular with locals and offers a sampler of traditional Costa Rican pub fare.

Between your tasty three-course meal, and wines that go down a treat, you’ll be ending the evening feeling every bit the San Jose local.

Great learning experience and fantastic guide
randyell, Oct 2022
I got a very extensive learning experience which really built upon my hours spent earlier that day at the National Museum. My Guide, Leo, was fantastic, and at my request, conducted much of my tour in Spanish, switching to near perfect English, whenever he or I felt it necessary to give me a clear understanding, or to convey important information..
Wonderful evening in San Jose
Heena_M, Oct 2022
We had a lovely evening learning about the history of Costa Rica. The evening dinner was delicious. Our tour guide was great and very knowledgeable.
A bunch of culture and a taste of the city
Luis_R, July 2022
Had an awesome time with our tour guide Malo (don't let the name fool you because everything was "muy bien") and fellow adventurers. Super knowledgeable and great story telling. The drink at the beginning was fine and the meal at the end was tasty. If you have high expectations in terms of a bigger food and beverage experience then I would probably suggest a different, food centric tour. However, if tasting a local beer, trying a local dish for dinner (the chifrijo was delicious), and learning a lot about the CULTURE and HISTORY of San Jose/Costa Rica is most important to you, this is a perfect experience and highly recommended.
See what the city looks like when the sun goes down.

Great City Tour

San José city tour was everything I hoped for and more! Malo was the best tour guide and shared so much Costa Rican history and culture with me! Food was amazing, Malo was very very knowledgeable and friendly, it felt very natural! Thank you so much, Malo!
An insightful learning adventure
Bridget_M, Jan 2022
Really enjoyed this culture and history heavy tour. Malo is a passionate, experienced, incredibly knowledgeable guide who shared with us so much about San Jose and Costa Rica. None of us spoke significant Spanish and Malo’s English was great- while teaching us some useful phrases along the way. Started with a drink, had a slow paced walk for about two hours hearing so much, and finished with a delicious and filling meal. We had a few great choices and the restaurant was kindly so adjustable to a small food allergy. Two others joined my husband and I and it was a perfect small group evening experience. 10/10 would do it again.
San Jose history and friends
Rhian_G, Dec 2021
Malo was a fantastic guide - he bought the history and culture of San Jose and Costa Rica to life. The group I was with were fabulous - it was all like a great night out with superb friends and food. I could do it every night !!!
Loooooved it!
Kellie_L, Dec 2021
Malo was great! He was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the city. Took us to a couple of great spots and went above and beyond. Felt like we were having dinner with old friends. Highly recommend this trip, completely changed our view of San Jose
Cultural tour not really food tour
Carly_S, Dec 2021
It was a great cultural tour but I wouldn’t consider this a food tour. We walked for 2 1/2 hours and learned lots of cool stuff, but we didn’t eat until the very end. It was a good experience but eat something before hand!
Worth every moment
Tony_D, Dec 2021
Awesome guide Jorge was really passionate about the tour, history and local haunts. This your is great for figuring out what locals do in the city, where to go and what to pay attention to. Highly recommend
Karen_L, Dec 2021
Gabriel was the best tour guide ever! He had so much knowledge about the history of San Jose. Being a native of Costa Rica was definitely a plus but he genuinely loved sharing it’s history. The pup he took us too was great! And the dinner was excellent! After dinner to assure we got home safely Gabriel, our tour guide walked back with us to the Hotel. What great service!
A Night on the Town

Great City Tour
CHERYL_R, Sept 2021
We enjoyed our city experience with our tour guide Juan. He was very informative and gave us so much history information on San Jose and Costa Rica. He pointed out and explained many historical buildings, where historical buildings use to be, and statues. Our tour ended with a wonderful meal.
Worth it!
Victor_P, Sept 2021
Gabo was great! Very knowledgeable and friendly, and even took the time out of his evening to escort another couple to an extra location after the end of the official tour.
A history buff's kind of tour
NicoleQ, Aug 2021
This is more of a historical walking tour than it is a traditional food tour. You will learn about impactful events and individuals contributing to the history and culture of San Jose via several mini-lectures around downtown. Multiple food stops are not part of this tour but rather a beverage at the beginning, an optional (not included beverage at the distillery), and finally a large 3 course meal at the end. Food is authentic and really tasty if you can hold out 3.5 hours. Our host Gabriel was very kind, informative, and very passionate about the history of San Jose. He left us lots of recommendations and taught many useful phrases in Spanish. I hope you are lucky enough to have him as your guide!
Great time
Cindy_W, June 2021
Really interesting! And great food. Loved our time in San Jose. Keep up the good work. Thank you very much.
So glad I did this tour!
Kristi_P, June 2021
Gabriel was super informative, friendly, and accommodating. I felt like I was spending the evening with a local friend showing me around town, more than a tour guide. If you want an authentic view of a part of the city with someone who is passionate about history and culture, he’s your guy!
