What To Expect

Board your climate-controlled minibus and relax on the journey inland to Pompeii. Once you arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage–listed archaeological digs, meet your guide and head off on a tour to discover Pompeii’s highlights.

As you explore, learn about the destructive volcanic eruption of AD 79 that buried the ancient city for centuries. The ash and molten lava that streamed out of Mt. Vesuvius preserved the town remarkably, and many original landmarks can be found around the site. See the old public baths, the Macellum (market), and the Temple of Jupiter, and hear about their history from your guide.

After a break for lunch at your own expense, continue with a drive up the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. Stretch your legs on a short hike up to the crater’s lip and learn about the infamous volcano from a mountain guide. Make use of some free time to gaze out over the Bay of Naples, then return to your transport for the drive back to Sorrento.

Traveller Tips

Wear closed toe shoes as the terrain is loose and dusty.
Try to do this in the spring or fall, as the heat can get quite uncomfortable, especially in Pompeii.
The hike to Vesuvius can be tough if you are expecting, elderly, or have any sort of medical/physical constraints, but it is well worth it for the views and memories.

Rained on in Pompei
Renee_E, Sept 2023
The tour was great until the downpour we experienced. The guide made the best of it. Mount Vesuvius was closed due to weather and we were kept updated about the changes and refund.
Learning from the past
James_Y, Sept 2023
Great guides who were knowledgeable and fun. We learned so much in the tour and found the whole experience great
Average Pompeii and Vesuvius tour
Mitesh_S, Sept 2023
Average tour, guide in Pompeii was rushing too fast, didn’t leave enough time to observe the place and take pictures. Our trip to mount Vesuvius was cancelled supposedly due to a landslide. However, we then found that other tour operators were able to go so very disappointed. Also not possible to contact viator in the UK to discuss any reimbursement.
Great day in Pompeii
Jacqueline_B, Sept 2023
Our guides for the day were informative and knowledgeable. Pompeii was one of my bucket list items and found mount Vesuvius just amazing
Pompeii in a thunderstorm !!
Neil_W, Sept 2023
The weather forecast gave a serve warning for thunderstorms, we were very surprised the trip still went ahead ? We got half way around Pompeii when the thunder, lightning & rain hit us, we were soaked to the skin and tour got cut short, tour to Vesuvius cancelled completely. We got a partial refund which for me didn’t cover what we missed out on ? I know Viator can’t control the weather but to be honest it should never have started given the forecast. It seem to me that the tour started so they don’t have to refund completely? Very disappointed
Fantastic

Great time Lulu was excellent. We enjoyed the tour and it was very pleasant and smooth. I would highly recommend.
To little time for too big a subject
Dave_M, Sept 2023
To be fair, it is a hard task to guide a large group around a site of Pompeii's size and do it true justice in 2hrs. This can only be classed as a taster tour and the guide did his best to describe and answer any questions. (For this the I would give the a guide 4 star rating) The trip up Vesuvius was a disappointment to be honest, as we learned very little more about the mountain geologically or historically on the coach trip up that the guide at Pompeii had highlighted and were left to climb up to the crater guideless. Apart from the awesome views of the bay of Naples, Vesuvius may have just been a slag heap with a large hole in it! The trip back to Sorrento was awful due to the traffic congestion and took hours. To be honest we wished we had take the train to & from Pompeii, took a good guide book, stayed all day and skipped Vesuvius!
Loved Pompeii
Phil_D, Sept 2023
After a slow start due to the large number of groups scheduled to leave at the same time for various tours, there was an unexpected walk with Teresa, our guide, to a nearby bus parking depot to meet with our driver, Luigi. The trip to Pompeii was filled with interesting information from Teresa regarding what we could see from the bus. Traffic caused some delays, but it is school time again. The journey passed quickly enough though. On arrival in Pompeii, Teresa brought us to the restaurant area which was to be our meeting point before departure. She handed us over to our Pompeii guide, Antonio, who was very knowledgeable and hilariously funny. He has a real passion for Pompeii and its history and gave us so much insight into how Pompeii functioned before it was lost. The amount of information gleaned from what has been uncovered to date is amazing The next part....the trip to Vesuvius. I don't like heights, so sitting next to the window was a big mistake. God bless Luigi....I don't know how he drives those hairpin bends in a bus every day. I couldn't make the walk up to the crater, but my husband did and was thrilled to do this. He has amazing photos and found the walk good, with some tough areas on the trail. He confirmed that there was no way I'd have done it, but I had already surmised that. We arrived back later than we were due....again due to heavy traffic, as everyone was back to the bus by the scheduled departure time from Vesuvius. A great day. Pompeii for me, being the best, aided by Antonio's entertaining commentary and encouraging us to take as many photos as possible 😀

Our guide, Teresa was well organized and knowledgeable. We had a great time and we learned a lot about Pompeii and Vesuvius as well as the Sorrento area. We are highly recommend this activity.
Better off just getting a skip the line ticket and exploring the site your self
Dino_D, Sept 2023
The ruins are fascinating to see but the tour does not cover enough of the grounds and is a bit light on information. Host to/from location could spend more time describing sites that were passed by. Host on tour spent a lot of time discussing the prostitution part of Pompei, would became rather boring in the end.
Excellent guides-friendly & knowledgable
Alison_S, Sept 2023
All excellent. Comfortable coach. Well driven. Well arranged. Interesting info and fun snippets given by guides.
Great tour for the money
jeffrey_S, Sept 2023
This is a must when visiting the area. They did an excellent job organizing the group and getting to the busses and sites. Very knowledgeable and fun tour guides.
Excellent experience
Allan_C, Sept 2023
The trip around Pompei was fantastic, with an excellent guide. The afternoon walk up Vesuvio was long and hard in the heat, but worth the effort to get to the top. Strongly recommended
5 Stars!
Rachel_L, Sept 2023
We had the pleasure of being shown around by Nicoletta, she was the best! Our guide at Pompeii was friendly, knowledgeable, and went at a good pace. Mt. Vesuvius was the highlight of our trip. The hike is STEEP, so good walking shoes are highly recommended. Wonderful tour!
Pompeii and Vesuvius in One Day
Jeffrey_C, Sept 2023
Enjoyed our guide Lulu. She was fun and informative. Our Pompeii visit was good but crowded. We had an excellent guide Jusy. She shared a lot of information but kept it interesting. The we drive to Vesuvius. Hiking to the cauldron was abu let list item. Slow and steady but we made it with no trouble. Our bus driver was very good T navigating the narrow roads and hills.
Fantastic tour
Neil_a, Sept 2023
The arrangements, the tour guide, the driver and the schedule were all brilliant. The only drawback was the itinerary when inside Pompeii. The Pompeii guide we had didn't include the amiptheatre and spoke a little fast. We decided to go off by ourselves, which we were really glad we did.
A wonderful experience
Deb_B, Sept 2023
Mel was a great tour guide. She was very knowledgeable about Pompeii and the history of the Amalfi coast. Lorenzo was an amazing driver. Antonio, our tour guide in Pompeii, made history fun. We loved his sense of humor. While a little tiring, the views from Mt Vesuvius were stunning!
Great experience!
Tina_D, Sept 2023
Great tour, great guide, Lulu was wonderful! Very well organized and informative. Would definitely recommend!
Great Tour
John_b, Sept 2023
Great tour, Lulu was a wonderful guide throughout the day and was a wealth of knowledge. Make sure to wear proper walking shoes as the ground In Pompeii is uneven in places and you will need them to hike Mt Vesuvius.
Easy meeting point in...
Yonju_R, Sept 2023
Easy meeting point in Sorrento. I usually plan most travel activities myself but it was so worth having all the logistics taken care of if you're trying to hit Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day. Teresa was a fun guide and kept things running smoothly. Rosario was a great driver, somehow made the ride look effortless from start to finish. The bus was so comfortable I kept falling asleep between stops! Giuseppina the Pompeii guide was extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot in 2 hours. The heat was no joke - while there were a few pockets of shade here and there, definitely listen to recommendations for carrying water, applying sunscreen, bringing a hat, etc. The Vesuvius hike was as expected based on the reviews (difficult if you aren't used to hiking, moderate if you are), the lower temperature at the top was so refreshing, and the view was just incredible.
