Enjoyed kayaking, but the snorkeling was not great
Matt_H, Jan 2023
Probably not the best place to snorkel. The water is pretty choppy and therefore not very clear. We enjoyed just getting out and kayaking to the small island. The guides were friendly, but I wouldn't snorkel again at this location.

It was a great experience. The kayaks were in great condition and the team was awesome about helping us in and out of the water. There were a good variety of fish and a starfish to see while snorkeling. It was a lovely and more affordable way to spend the morning!
Fun time

Beautiful snorkeling. Caught a few fish from shoreline. Rocks were slippery so advise caution when walking on them. Guides were helpful getting us to and from island, and assisted getting out of water.
The snorkeling was much better than I expected

This is a simple tour. The guide met us at our hotel (Diria), we walked a couple hundred yards down the road to their place on the beach. They carried the kayaks down to the water and we paddled across the Captain's Island. The island is not much more than a rock outcropping, you can see it from anywhere on Tamarindo Beach, it's the island beyond the moored boats with a sandy looking beach. It was a windy day and the operator asked if wanted to wait until later in the day to see if it calmed down, we were ready to go so decided to give it a try. It was not a bad paddle across to the beach and the landing area is good. The guide walked us around the island pointing out wild life and view points on shore. I did not expect the snorkeling to be very good as it was quite windy and frankly it didn't look like much of a reef as we paddled over it. To my surprise, it was actually pretty good despite the rough water. A good reef with reasonably clear water and a good variety of fish. The guide found some unique fish, including spider starfish and a puffer fish. The paddle back was a bit difficult as it was pretty much straight into the wind. The guide hooked up a tow rope between the kayaks to help keep us on track. The kayaks are very stable even in fairly rough waters. It took a while, maybe 30 minutes, to get back to shore but it was a good workout. Total time was just over 2 hours. I would do this one again, it would even better under better weather conditions.
