What To Expect

Wandering through the medieval towns of Transylvania, it’s easy to forget what century you’re in. Begin your tour back in time in central Brașov, where you’ll meet your guide and climb aboard a car or minivan for the trip north. During the scenic 1.5-hour drive, listen to interesting facts and anecdotes about Romanian history from your guide.

Your first stop is the 14th-century village of Viscri, built by Saxon colonists. As you approach, admire the impressive whitewashed walls and red-roofed towers that surround the village, designed to protect early inhabitants from invading Turks. Wander the rustic streets of the town and visit its UNESCO World Heritage-listed church (own expense).

Continue on to the remarkably well-preserved Sighişoara, so rich in history that the entire village is a UNESCO site. Hear about the medieval town’s legendary former resident Vlad the Impaler, a Wallachian prince and warlord who inspired Bram Stoker’s fictional character Dracula. Enjoy free time to explore Sighişoara’s cobblestoned streets, bell tower and citadel on your own, and visit a café to purchase lunch if you wish.

Finally, visit the hilltop Rupea Fortress, which was built for defense in the 1300s and later repurposed as a Saxon village in the 18th century. Head inside the walls for a guided tour (own expense), and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside before the return drive to Brașov.

Beautiful villages and great pie

This was our second trip with Charlie after going to see the castles two days before. And man, it did not disappoint! If you are interested in the countries past and present, different styles of living and just seeing scenic villages and towns in general, I would certainly recommend to do this day trip. We had never seen a fortified church before, so that was super nice, and the town of Sighisoara is just so beautiful. Charlie is a great guide that can tell you so much about everything, while also being super nice, friendly and funny and a great driver, so you feel safe along the way! We also stopped for some great coffee and pie. Thanks Charlie and hoping to see you again at some point!

Our tour guide Karoly was absolutely amazing! He took us through the mountainside to three sites and by the end of the day we felt like friends! He had so much knowledge of each location and really took his time explaining everything to us. Karoly always made sure to stop for lunch, souvenir and bathroom breaks. We had "Dan" as our Tour Guide, just the two of us. He is a knowledgeable and experienced guide, with a lively personality. The Singing Guide

The guide was on time. He spoke good English. His name was Dan. We went to the places described for this tour. Dan knew a lot of Romanian history and facts about all the places we visited. We did not have time for breakfast so took some snacks with us, but when we started to have some of them we got a stern message from Dan, "don't eat in the car." Later, about 1100 Dan stopped at a gas station to fill the car and told us we could get a snack there. Dan had a sandwich and coffee. The description of the tour said we would have free time in Sighisoara for lunch but Dan never turned us loose and took us to a fast food place for lunch. I don't like fast food, in America or Romania. When we went into one of the beautiful churches I sat down for some quiet reflection. That was not to be; Dan sat beside me and read a long description of the churches' history. Another thing, Dan considers himself a singer and sang for a lot of the time we were with him. Overall, the tour was more about Dan than the clients.

Dan, our fantastic guide, made our holiday in Transylvania a fun, educational, and memorable one! My husband and I were the only people who signed up for the tour on this day, so we had a private tour with Dan. The sites visited exceeded our expectations. We learned so much history and saw such beautiful scenery. This tour covers an amazing amount of territory. It was a clear, sunny day, so views of the mountains were spectacular. Dan has a beautiful voice and a great playlist of everything from opera arias to Frank Sinatra to Johnny Cash. We had fun singing in the car and getting to know Romania, Transylvania and Dan. A home cooked lunch in Viscri was a special treat.optional but inexpensive. This day was one of the highlights of our six week trip. Thanks Dan for your hospitality.

My wife and I travelled to Romania for the first time and were keen on understanding the country's history and culture. Our tour guide - Mihai - picked us up from our hotel right on time 8:15 and guided us through the journey. Mihai is extremely knowledgeable about the country's history and equally passionate about her culture. Right at the start of the trip Mihai had told us that the star of the day was going to be Viscri and he was right. I would highly recommend this tour as well as Mihai as the guide. In case the latter is not possible, I'd suggest requesting an official tourist guide.

Dan was the most enthusiastic, informative, engaging and surprising guide. Being winter my friend and I were the only two on the tour so it was as good as a private tour! Absolutely excellent. Our guide Mihai, from Active Travel Brasov, was well informed, spoke excellent English, and went the extra mile to make our day trip perfect including some unscheduled stops. The sights are amazing, Viscri is only really reachable by 4x4 vehicle due to poor road condition, and it is a must see on any visit to Transylvania. We had Mihai for another trip whilst in Brasov, and we loved his company.

Amazing places discovered during this tour. Sighisoara is one of the better places I have visited in Romania. Medieval town, people still lives there. The tour guide Kartsi Balázs was excellent. We saw all the secrets in the fortified churches. Rupea is amazing and the route to go to Viscri is really lovely. It worth the visit!

We toured with Charlie from Active Travel Day Tours, who was knowledgeable and engaging in every way possible. We were also fortunate to get his services for our Brasov tours on consecutive days. For this tour we visited Rupea Fortress which was similar to Rasnov Fortress, saw the fortified church in Viscri and had the pleasure of driving past Prince Charles of England's Romanian retreat home, and ended the day in the lovely city of Sighisoara. The highlight of the trip was definitely Sighisoara with her clock and guild towers, and her church on the hill. Charlie was with us every step of the way, including the long flight of stairs leading up to the church on the hill but don't worry there is a rest point every 7 steps. He also brought us to the famed shop of the Spoon Maker where we purchased an intricately carved wooden spoon. Do sign up for this tour if you can allocate another day-trip from Brasov - in our opinion Bran/Rasnov/Peles should be the 1st tour to get.

Cristan was a wealth of information about the history of his country in general, as well as these sites we visited. I was a bit taken aback at first when he drove us himself, all 4 of us tightly packed in his own car, I thought it was an official company with a tour bus, but it gave us lots of freedom to stop whenever he suggested a good spot for a picture, or something interesting to see on the side of the road. He was very patient, and gave us lots of time to browse and wander, and also recommended a gem of a distillery at Sighisoara, with amazing liquor. He was a great host and guide.
