Good Weather = Good Time

We were blessed with a clear period when we were up on the mountain and it likely makes a huge difference on a participants experience. We saw the peak and the caldera below without any cloud cover and it’s spectacular. The optional cable car/4x4 ride is essential. If you decide not to do it you are denying yourself a true Mt Etna experience. Definitely worth going, but keep in mind your in the hands of the weather gods.

Thanks to our host and guide, Andrea, we had a great day trip up Mt Etna followed by some excellent food tastings at an Enoteca Dell’Etna. Despite recent rumblings from the volcano, Andrea swiftly put us at ease with his rapid fire talk about his native Catania and the beloved Mama Etna. His careful driving and concern for the group was very clear. We enjoyed chatting in the van about what to do and see in Catania. All in all he made our day a memorable one!

Salvo is incredible. He had a trilingual group and made everyone feel welcome and repeated info three times so we all could understand. He is informative and energetic. His language skills are excellent and we hope he is compensated extra for this skill and the work it requires during a tour. We highly recommend this tour and especially Salvo!!! Both Mt Etna and cave plus winery were wonderful!

Natasha was great and on time for picking up at hotel. The trip to Etna at 2000m was cool. Then if you want to go further you have to pay extra. You will wait at least 1h30 while the people that want to go further came back. Nothing much to do while waiting except going around some craters or shopping. Then we went to visit a lava cave for 20mn max and then tasting some local foods (price OK) Going back to hotel

Giuseppe was an excellent guide. We were a mixed group of strangers from Italy, Germany, uk, France, Switzerland and Estonia…we bonded as a group and really enjoyed our trip up Etna. It took a little longer up the mountain that’s was expected, but Giuseppe did not rush us and we still had plenty of time for the tasting later.

We were a group of 6 whose ages ranged from 60 to 75. Some with new knees and another waiting for a hip transplant. The great thing about this trip is that the basic part was easy enough so everyone could participate and enjoy the views from about 3,500 meters up. The ride in the gondola and the busses was enjoyable. The tour guide was very friendly and accommodating. Then, those who chose to, enjoyed the opportunity to walk up a previous eruption point to look inside and walk part way down a caldera. And the same went for a look inside a "cave" or hollowed out lava tube. We were lucky to have a bright sunny day but we prepared by dressing in layers and bringing gloves and hats. Bottom line a very enjoyable day for all.

This tour was good value, our driver picked us up a few minutes from where we were staying and drove us all the way to Mt Etna. Our driver, who was also the tour leader, filled us in on history and facts along the way. We hiked the mountain, which was beautiful and learned a lot. The trek lasted a few hours and was not overly arduous. The winery and food was excellent, we got more samples and variety than I was anticipating. Overall I would recommend this experience.

If you're on a shore day from a cruise ship, make sure to look for your Etna Tribe guide AT THE GATES TO THE PORT, near the pink and white customs building, and NOT right where you get off the ship. We were given the wrong information by the tourism agents at the dock, and could have easily missed our scheduled pick-up. Francesco, our Etna Tribe guide, was fantastic!!! He made our day both personal and unforgettable. On the drive up, he described some of the history and architecture of Catania to our small group. He gave us some background on past eruptions, pointing out areas that were sites of more recent lava flows vs older ones. He also explained how locals consider Mt. Etna to be a benevolent figure rather than a destructive force. The local agriculture benefits mightily from the rich mineral deposits of her eruptions. At Rifugio Sapienza, only my husband and I opted to take the cable car and bus to the higher altitudes, while Francesco took the rest of our group around the sites in the immediate vicinity. At the top of the cable car, we were greeted by an English-speaking guide who gave us more info on Mt. Etna's geology and history. Then, we lined up for the bus to one of the inactive craters where we hiked up the switchback path and around the rim (not for the faint-hearted). We took the bus and cable car back down again. This all took about 2 1/2 hours in total, and we loved every minute. Afterwards, we rejoined our group down at the Rifugio and Francesco drove us first to see a unique lava tube (more interesting than you might think), and then to a winery/olive oil producer for a tasting. Our hostess there was extremely interesting and genial, and the tastings were... very, very TASTY! It was a perfect way for us all to wind down at the end of our day. Francesco was especially careful to get my husband and me back to the port in plenty of time to get back aboard our cruise ship. Thank you, Francesco. You made our day perfect.

Trekking to the lower craters with Francesco leading in low cloud, 50-60 kph winds and horizontal rain/sleet. While he closely monitored our safety, he never stopped explaining about Etna and how it had evolved over the centuries. The trip to the cave and later produce tasting were also very interesting.

A great tour - we did the optional trip to the top of Etna on e-bikes which was incredible. More challenging on the way down than the way up! Tasting was great - a huge mix of stuff in a lovely setting. It takes all day - back at 6pm. Tour guide was fab - thanks Dan!

Worth to select it. Guide well informed, got back around 3:30. Didn't loose time.

Nice tour of ETNA. Daria was the guide. She was friendly, passioned with the mountain and with good knowledge of the history and facts but without being to detailed. The flavour stop was interesting, of course has the meaning of promoting the local food and wines, however they have selected a winery in a village of ETNA not close to the main activity. Worthy to select it. The price could be a little bit lower. Schedule was followed.
