What To Expect

Depart Edinburgh by comfortable vehicle, and journey along the Firth of Forth.

Learn about Outlander, the historical time-travel TV series based on Diana Gabaldon’s stories, and hear trivia about its characters and Scotland’s history.

Stop for photos at 16th-century Midhope Castle, used as Lallybroch Castle, and visit Blackness Castle, the 15th-century fortress that doubled as Black Jack’s headquarters.

Explore the castle (own expense), seeing why it’s called 'the ship that never sailed,’ before traveling to Linlithgow. Take a stroll around this small town or visit ruined Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and setting of Wentworth Prison, where Jamie was imprisoned.

Continue to Callendar House, enjoying about 45 minutes to explore this 14th-century mansion-turned-museum, whose kitchen served as the Duke of Sandringham's house. Then, visit the village of Culross whose medieval houses perfectly illustrate 18th-century Scotland, and see Mercat Cross, used as fictional Cranesmuir.

View the Culross Palace gardens, home of Claire’s herb garden, and after refreshments (own expense) at the Biscuit Café, take photos of the Tuileries standing stones (time-dependent).

Finally, visit 17th-century Hopetoun House, admiring its interior and grounds, which starred as the Duke of Sandringham’s residence, before finishing at the start point in Edinburgh.

Please note: Blackness Castle is closed on Fridays from October 1, 2017 through to March 31, 2018. The tour will include a photo stop at the castle during this period.

The trip was amazing. We spent a wonderful day with our great guide Marty. This itineraire is so interesting, especially the visit to Falkland with the gorgeous Falkland Palace and their gardens and also a beautiful square with the Bruce Fountain in the middle of town, which is important for those who admire the Outlander film.

Loved this tour. Very relaxing. Only reason I gave a 4 was because I didn't feel that it was made clear that it cost more to get into several of our tour stops. Nominal fees, but the tour itself was not inexpensive. Maybe be clearer on that point for guests. Otherwise, Donald our guide was knowledgeable and humorous. He played music for us a few times that added to the fun. Enjoyed exploring what interested us.

Our tour guide Andrew T made the whole trip fun and immersive in Scottish history. We certainly enjoyed the “Outlander” entertainment bits but really appreciated so much of the historic and cultural insights that Andrew provided. A lot packed in but adequate time generally to appreciate each of the stops.

I was amazed that we were able to visit and see as much as we did in one day on this trip. Not only were we able to go to three Castles at specific locations but also visit two towns that were recreated to embody fictional settings (and they also had a castle/a palace to visit too). Marty was a great tour guide who helped us make the most of his experience.

Great Tour!

This experience was so much fun! Donald was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and kind. There were a few hiccups in our route out of town but all was fine and Donald was able to navigate that well. The only thing that is misleading from the description is that you do have to purchase tickets to the sights, it’s not free like it says here. It was less than £20 but that is important if you’re on a budget. Overall this was a great experience and I would do it again.

Our guide, Gary, was very knowledgeable not only about the sites but also about other historical and important places we saw or drove by. The van was very comfortable and the weather was amazing. On the way back into town he played some wonderful Scottish music classics for us as well. I would recommend this tour for both Outlander fans and those who don't know anything about Outlander.
