What To Expect

Experience the Tower of London’s long and stormy history. Make your own way to the Tower, once inside explore independently, take an audio tour (additional fee) or join a 1-hour guided tour led by a Yeoman Warder or ‘Beefeater.’ Yeoman-led tours depart every 30 minutes from the Tower entrance. Learn the Tower’s origin story of 1066 and how it evolved from William the Conquerer's stronghold to a royal palace, armory, royal mint, prison and gruesome execution place.

Pass under the famous ravens that perch near Wakefield Tower and lose yourself in myth and history as you visit the White Tower and its Royal Armories collection, the Bloody Tower and Traitors’ Gate. Hear the tale of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's unfortunate second wife, who passed through Traitors’ Gate in 1536 and was quickly tried for adultery and executed. Walk to Tower Gate, the execution site where Boleyn and many others met their fateful ends.

Despite its chilling reputation, the Tower of London has also been the cradle for the British Crown Jewels since the 14th century. Get a close-up look at this remarkable regalia, the ultimate symbol of the British monarchy and the centerpiece of coronations since 1661. Don’t miss the famous 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond.

After you've visited the major sites, stroll along the Wall Walk and head into the Medieval Palace to admire the beautifully reconstructed spaces. Take your time soaking up this cornerstone of English history.

We thought the Beefeater Tour was an actual tour. Anyone that walked into the facility could join the "tour". There were around 100 people listening to each Beefeater. Not at all what we expected.
Great tour although value added by Viator unclear

We thoroughly enjoyed the narrative provided by the Beefeater guide; he combined history with humour. We had sufficient time afterwards to explore other aspects of the Tower of London on our own. Our only criticism of the tour is that it is the same tour offered by the group that maintains this and other British attractions, but at a much higher price. We originally booked our tour through this group, but when we checked our meeting time, it said 6 AM. So we booked through Viator in hopes of being able to cancel our original booking. We had not yet the fine print that said both tickets could not be cancelled, so we ended up paying for the same tour through two different groups. We later found that the 6 AM meeting time was a computer glitch and that we could have shown up anytime after 10 AM. We still enjoyed the tour but the value added by Viator was unclear.
      Very informative tour

Beefeater was very knowledgeable and humorous. After the tour there was lots to see on our own so allow at least three hours for everything. It is right next to Tower Bridge (duh) so we walked over it and back as well - took about 15 minutes with photo stops. It is the iconic bridge we all think of when we see London but many think it is London Bridge. There is a tour of it as well but we were getting tired so we didn’t go.

A great experience to view the Crown Jewels, palace, chapel, ravens, armoury , torture chamber etc. We did do the Beefeater part of the tour as we had a fair bit of knowledge about the Tower beforehand. If I came back I would do the audio tour, highly recommend this tour.
      Excellent value for money

Apart from the wonderful history, the whole atmosphere of the place was terrific and so well organised. The tour of the Crown Jewels is was a little underwhelming but the visual electronics was so professionally done and very impressive.
      Entertaining, educational, engaging and terrific!

Tour guide was amazing — so entertaining as well as funny as well as extremely knowledgeable, helpful and educational and engaging. Made the whole experience so fascinating and a highlight of our trip to London.

Very interesting place to visit, but what happened to the dungeon torture chamber...nothing like it used to be. Tour guide was great...made it interesting.
      Great tour.

Yeoman’s tour was very informative and entertaining. Learned quite a bit about the darker side of British royalty. Well worth including in your trip to London.
      Loved!

Loved this self paced tour. The Tower was so much fun learning of its history and all. And viator was so easy to use and we didn’t have any trouble at all with our tickets! Would 100% do it again!
      Highly recommended

I used the audio pack and followed the tour. It was really informative and easy to follow and included audio from historians to provide extra facts and detail. I spent 5 hours mooching around and soaking in the whole experience. Highly recommend!

We had a great visit to the Tower, had the tour around with a Beefeater which lasted an hour, after we visited other area's of the Tower.
interesting & historic site. I must see!
      Gabriela_M, Sep 2023
Very interesting and historic site. I must see. The tour guides “Beefeaters” made the whole experience fun:)
Great day at the Tower of London
      June_A, Sep 2023
Lucy, our Beefeater Guard was fantastic. She spoke clearly, gave plenty of information and added in humorous stories. Wandering around the Tower was interesting and the audio guide helped explain all the things we saw.
      Fascinating insight into London's history
      Juhee_T, Sep 2023
Very interesting. I did not know much about the history of the tower but I learnt a lot and I enjoyed walking around, particularly on a sunny day. Getting there is very easy from the Tube. The Crown Jewels are breathtaking and are a must see. View them early so that you avoid lines (getting there as soon as it opens helps), and then spend the rest of your time exploring and doing the tours. The Yeoman tour is a must, and hearing the stories of what happened centuries ago was fascinating. If you get there as soon as it opens, there can be some confusion as to where the Yeoman tour starts while the staff set up (the tours start at the moat).
      Good tour learned a lot.
      Kerri_R, Sep 2023
Very informative. Plan on spending some time there. There is a lot to take in. Lots of history in this land….good and bad.
Average, much better on your own with audio guide.
      Tjitske_S, Sep 2023
A bit of a disappointment. Don't bother to join the half hourly guided tour with the yeoman. Group way too big to be worth joining, couldn't hear a thing. Instead we got us some audio guides and we went around by ourselves, which was much more enjoyable.
