Great activity for the adventurous!

Our family had a great experience on the self guided bike tour. Our guide was very informative about local history on the bus ride up the mountain. Gave plenty of directions for us to remember how to bike down on our own. The bikes were safe. You do have to go on the edge of the road and be very careful of traffic, but we felt safe the entire time. We did have to rely on Google maps on our phones a few times to double check the directions. Stopped for a good lunch on the way down the mountain. Definitely would recommend this for families with older children/young adults. Be prepared for all types of weather. It started off freezing cold, had some rain showers, and lots of sun, even getting a little sunburnt.
Skip this unless you like lots of driving in a bus

We did the unguided tour (intentionally, not because it was less expensive) because the corny tour guide untrue stories are simply annoying. We’ll go figure we had to go up the mountain for 2 hours (yes 2 hours before you even get on the bike), in a bus with a bunch of guided tour people asking annoying questions. The bike ride itself was fun but I wouldn’t recommend this experience. We left our hotel at 7 am and didn’t get back until after 3pm. Only an hour of that 8 hour experience was spent on a bike.
Nice Sunrise

The sunrise was amazing and the staffs commentary up to the top and background on the park and Hawaii was great. Riding down the volcano after sunrise was pretty fun while in the park. Once we exited the park and got farther away from it, the roads became less friendly to bikers. Had fun in the park but felt it could have ended before sneaking through some of the local neighborhoods where people weren’t sharing there road.
