What To Expect

Start your day in Maui with a breathtaking sunrise view of the island from atop its highest peak on this daybreak excursion to Mount Haleakala. This exceptional sunrise experience is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Maui.

Start your trip in the dark of the very early morning with a pickup at your Maui hotel. You’ll then continue by air-conditioned minibus on a scenic drive passing the Kula District. and Maui’s rare silversword plants.

Arriving at the Haleakala National Park, steadily climb by minibus up Haleakala to 9,740 feet elevation to the Visitor Center. You’ll see Maui’s rare and endemic silversword plants that poignantly bloom once, then perish. You’ll also witness the sunrise from the Visitor Center area. The views from Haleakala are nothing short of spectacular. Writer Mark Twain, upon visiting the peak in 1866, wrote that the volcano was “the most sublime spectacle I ever witnessed and the memory of it will remain with me always.”

Observe the first rays of the new day slowly creep across the distant horizon. Soon the sky fills with the majestic glow of the new day, and the warm beams of light creep across the island of Maui, illuminating the land below. It’s a sight you’re sure to remember for many years to come.

Wonderful sunrise experience!
Christine_B, Mar 2023
Fabulous sunrise views! Alfredo ensures you are in the best spot to capture the sunrise. The breakfast afterwards was warm and delicious. The restaurant is surrounded by lovely gardens and offers beautiful views. Alfredo also provided lots of educational information about the Hawaiian culture, language, flora, fauna and it enhanced the experience.
All about Wayne and his opinions
Johnny_B, Mar 2023
Wayne the driver has diarrhea o the mouth. He couldn’t help but to comment on everything that came into his mind when he was driving. Since his voice was piped in over our heads the entire 10 hours we couldn’t even have a conversation amongst ourselves. He even talked about the construction of the road we were driving on including the yellow stripes. His opinionated comments were so boring and irrelevant that it became overwhelming before we even got to the top. We talked with other people in the group that were as sick of listening as we were. We couldn’t wait to get out of the bus
Response from Host, Mar 2023
It is certainly disappointing to hear that you didn't feel the driver provided appropriate commentary. Thank you for the level of detail you provided which allows us to follow up. Mahalo.
Haleakala

Our tour guide, Preston, was amazing! He was full of knowledge of Hawaii from geography to flora and fauna. Unfortunately, there was a torrential downpour making the trip up the mountain slightly terrifying. At the top you could not see 3 feet in front of you, let alone the sunrise due to high wind and sleeting rain (no one's fault). Preston told us at the top how many trips he had taken up Haleakala and he was an excellent driver. I would have felt more at ease knowing that before climbing up the volcano. It was just a long trip, very early in the am. We were exhausted and didn't see much. We did learn a lot and the Kula Lodge breakfast was lovely! I booked months in advance so could not know what the weather would be like.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Glad to hear that you enjoyed your guide and many other experiences you had on tour. It is unfortunate that the weather didn't cooperate - it has been quite windy and rainy in the states recently. Mahalo!

View from the top. Interaction with the tour driver/guide. This is merely added text which this silly app requires
Great experience,
James_R, Mar 2023
The tour director was engaging and did a great job of maximizing the experience. The scenery was somewhat shrouded by clouds but spectacular nonetheless.
Everything was great...
Chittaranjan_P, Mar 2023
Everything was great except in breakfast they don't serve Toast. Climbing in darkness in a mid size tour bus when is raining on mountain roads while temp is hovering at 37 F.... We would like to proper tires on tour bus. We noticed right front tire was worn out. It is safety issue. When you climb 10000 feet, road could be icy or slippery.
Making the best of imperfect situation

Tour guide handled the unexpected well and kept his cool. He had to circle back to Kaanapali to pick up guests that were added to the tour after we left Kaanapali for guests in Lahaina. We also had to circle back to Kahului pick up locations when people were not there. Wayne was great and very informative. Weather was awful with high wind and heavy fog. We did not see the crater at all and at sunrise we saw the sun glowing through the clouds. We were prepared for the cold but disappointed with the view. We understand that the tour was at the mercy of weather conditions. The breakfast at Kula Lodge was great and the highlight of the tour given the circumstances.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
We are certainly glad to hear that you enjoyed your guide. It is unfortunately the the weather didn't cooperate, hopefully you can visit again soon!
Wayne is the man!
Liz_S, Mar 2023
Wayne our tour guide and driver made our trip! He was funny, informative and engaging. His vast knowledge of Hawaii was fascinating. He gave great instructions and details on what to expect. Be sure to dress in layers, it’s very cold, windy and rainy at the top of the mountain! Thanks Wayne for an amazing day!
Beautiful Experience
Nobody_J, Mar 2023
Tour Guide Was Absolutely Great! Preston Is Very Knowledgeable Of Hawaiian History & Culture Would Absolutely Recommend This Tour! Now For The Breakfast It Was Ok The Server Lady Was Rude Upon Being Seated & Seemed As Tho NO1 Knew Who Their Actual Server Was- And $8 For Literally 1 Piece Of Toast Was A Tad Bit Much- So I Suggest Stick To Your Meal That Comes With Your Tour -DEFINITELY Dress Warm (Like A Winter Storm) Just Cause Your On Maui You Are 9000+ ft Above Sea Level So Socks,Beanie & Jackets Are Highly Suggested- Pls Keep In Mind This Is UNCONTROLLABLE To Any Human As Far As Weather So Your NOt guaranteed To Actually See The Sunrise But To Even Be In The Clouds Is An Amazing Experience 🤩 HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Preston was the best tour...
Scott_S, Feb 2023
Preston was the best tour guild I have experienced. Very informative and great to be with. He had a few extra items that helped keep us warm on top of the mountain.
Sunrise tour
Pam_L, Feb 2023
Sunrise was incredible! The total tour/drive was educational as Preston did a fabulous job of narrating both what we were seeing and a lot of Hawaiian history and traditions.
A totally amazing experience
Sally_B, Feb 2023
What an amazing experience! The sunrise on top of Haleakala is truely gorgeous. Well worth the 3am start. Our guide, Preston, was fantastic, very funny, friendly and knowledgeable. He also had spare cold weather guide. Please don’t underestimate how cold it is up there, it’s freezing. You need proper cold weather gear.
Fantastic
Thomas_G, Feb 2023
The tour driver was excellent. Gave a history of Hawaiian traditions, plants and animals near the volcano.
Great experience!
Cheryl_M, Feb 2023
The restaurant where we had breakfast. It was a great experience although no sunrise- just clouds. Our guide was fantastic - informative and oh so nice. I deeply appreciated his sharing his culture with us!!
It was a great trip!
Sonya_G, Feb 2023
Our guide was awesome! The weather didn’t cooperate so we didn’t get to see the sunrise but no one can control the weather. Breakfast was the best meal I’ve had on a tour!
Disappointed
Darryl_F, Feb 2023
Our driver, Preston was Outstanding! The tour itself wouldn’t do again. Please, Please, Please advertise that substantial Warm Clothing is Required for this tour! At 37 degrees with 40 MPH winds my wife was not dressed properly to even exit the van. We also thought a bike ride back down the mountain was included??? Given the conditions we wouldn’t have wanted to do that anyway and had we known the typical conditions we Would Not have signed up for this tour!
Response from Host, Feb 2023
Glad to hear that you enjoyed your driver. Thank you for the feedback, we appreciate it. Mahalo!
Best birthday
Carolina_L, Feb 2023
An amazing experience but bring warm clothing and gloves 🧤 it is freezing 🥶 up there .. our tour guide Preston was AMAZZING. I hope you are lucky enough to get him as your guide!
Great Guide/ Driver
Richard_M, Feb 2023
Our guide was very personal and friendly. She explained where best to stand so we could avoid the winds and get the best view. She also entertained us with her stories and ukulele.
An experience
Casey_P, Feb 2023
Netty was fun. It was very cold and very windy. We'd brought layers as suggested, but it wasn't enough. I'd suggest a beanie, gloves, and some kind of scarf, too. Breakfast was mediocre at best. We had to sit outside, so we never warmed up til we actually got back from the trip. Breakfast was cold by the time we got it, after a wait, even though we were told it'd be ready right away since the orders were called in ahead of time. Cool experience and glad the clouds moved enough to see the beginning of the sunrise.
Amazing sunrise!
Joy_V, Feb 2023
Excellent tour!! Very fun! We loved our breakfast at the Kula Lodge, too. It’s very cold and windy, so dress warm (think down jacket, hat, gloves, wool socks).
