What To Expect

Your day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle starts with the train or bus journey from Munich through the German countryside. The entrance fee to the castle is not included (you can pay on the day), but by booking this tour in advance, you receive skip-the-line access to Neuschwanstein so you won’t waste time standing in the ticket queue.

Once inside the enchanting structure, take a tour with a guide, who shares fascinating stories about the reclusive Bavarian king who commissioned a new residence in the 19th century. Thought to be mad, King Ludwig II desired a fantasy castle built in the mountains, an obsessive feat that was still incomplete when he died. Visit the best vantage points for views and photo ops of the castle’s towers, interiors and surrounding scenery such as the lake, gorge and equally beautiful Hohenschwangau Castle.

A huge thanks to our tour guide, Paul! he was very informative and entertaining throughout the entire day. We learned about the history of King Ludwig and the Neuschwanstein Castle during the scenic train ride. Upon arrival in the town, Paul brought us to a delicious local spot for lunch before walking up the path to the castle. Throughout the walk, we stopped to learn more about the history. We were escorted through the castle by a tour guide that works at the castle and Paul met us afterwards at the bus stop before heading back to the train. Overall a greats experience and we highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Bavaria!

Story book castle

Our tour guide Michele was great. She explained the history of the castle on our bus ride there. She helped us navigate the city below the castle and gave us options of how to best explore the castle and the grounds. We then recapped when we got back to the bus and she explained what happened to the king after the castle was built. She explained everything like it was a story with a beginning, middle, and end which is perfect for a story book castle tour haha.

With only a limited time in Munich we were unsure of spending almost an entire day on this tour (6+ hours) but it was WELL worth it! It's a two hour bus ride each way but the bus is comfortable and seeing the countryside instead of the city was nice. The castle is an amazing experience with the most incredible views. Your time inside the castle is somewhat limited but there is more than enough time outside and around. You even have some time in the quaint town - enough time for a quick meal or a drink and snack. Our tour guides were very knowledgable and friendly.

Easy way to get there and back

They take you from Munich to the castle via a coach bus. Once there you can either walk up to the castle (which is what I opted to do) or pay to take a different bus run by the castle’s facilities. Overall I felt like I had plenty of time to see what I wanted and didn’t feel like we stayed anywhere for too long. All in all it was great to see the castle and not worry about transportation, plus the tour guides provide helpful tips and trivia about the castle

Pretty much a waste of a day

The day was miserable, with constant and sometimes heavy rain. The tour of the castle was the highlight. But our castle guide was just going through the paces. Few rooms were included and of those, several had all furnishings removed. I think this tour was much too long. Even on a nice day, there wasn’t enough to do to justify having 4 hours of free time. Our guide, Michelle, was knowledgeable and helpful. I also felt that Radius’s tour check-in was poorly organized. There were 3-4 groups going out at roughly the same time and no established meeting spot for any of them. People just milled around, hoping they’d hear their group called. The gathering area was cluttered with junk and dirty.

The tour guides were great - very personable, and very informative. I would suggest that when the guides describe the hike up to the castle, they do so in more detail than a generic term of its heart. You’re a many people who opted to do the hike that frankly shouldn’t have as they didn’t understand the incline as well as gravel conditions. And then the one downside is when we got back onto the bus after the tour, the guys were advertising that beer would be available for all on the ride home. They only had 10 bottles available and so it was a letdown. In the future, they should have enough bottles for all on the tour or not offer this amenity.

Thanks for the review and your feedback. We agree that the hike up isn't for everyone and it is difficult to describe as everyone has their own relative idea as to what is hard. Typically the bus drivers keep extra beer under the bus that can be brought up if the beer in the fridge sells out. It sounds like this was not the case on the day of your tour so apologies if this left some people feeling thirsty. We hope you got some nice beer hall recommendations from our guides for after the tour at least to make up.

It was very nice, fun trip. Our guide, Stevo was informative about history and other things, and made this trip enjoyable. Yet, I hoped that the trip total price would have included the entrance fee for the castle. The castle entrance fee was printed as $14 but we were required to pay $17 at the local travel agency before we got on the tour bus. Also, it would be helpful to give us warning that a lot of walking and a shuttle bus fee is expected to get to the castle from the trip bus parking lot.

We visited Neuschwanstein Castle from Arkansas in the United States. Our guide, Thomas, was extremely knowledgeable and enhanced our experience to the beautiful Castle 10 fold. He provided us with information about the paintings we would be seeing in the Castle and all of the history behind them and King Ludwig, II. We learned so much history on our bus ride to the Castle that the trip flew by. Also, the bus was very clean and comfortable. If we could give this excursion 10 stars, we would!
