The main difference between the two places is that Pompeii was a bustling city, gateway for merchants and travellers, while the latter was more of a residential village for aristocrats and intellectuals. What To Expect

Begin your trip with pickup from your select Naples hotel and hop aboard your coach toward Pompeii. Once buried under a blanket of ash from Mount Vesuvius’ eruption in 79 AD, the city wasn't unearthed until the 18th century.

As you enter (own expense), follow your guide through the ruins and learn the fascinating history behind the ancient city. Pass excavations of the Teatro Grande, which once housed up to 5,000 spectators, and the Forum.

Continue to a family-run corals and cameo factory to learn more about the jewelry-making process. Afterward, walk to the 18th-century Ristorante Vesuvio for a delicious, Italian-style lunch.

Journey next to the coastal town of Ercolana, where the ruins of Herculaneum reside, another town struck during the infamous eruption. Though Pompeii is more widely-known, Herculaneum hosts a wealth of archaeological treasures. The actual tours were very good. The guides in both places were excellent and they covered a lot of ground; two hours, including 20 minutes of free time for picture taking, in Pompeii and an hour and a half in Herculaneum. There was also an hour for lunch. So three and a half hours of exploration. The total time we were with the tour was eight hours, three hours of exploring, one hour for lunch and four hours of ticket gathering and travel. Considering that we were with the tour for eight hours, I wished that we had at least another half hour in Pompeii, even if it was on our own without a guide. Next issue, the air conditioning in the bus that we traveled in for approximately three and one half hours was broken on a very hot and humid day. We were told when we took the bus from Pompeii to Herculaneum that the bus would be replaced but that did not happen. Instead we were treated to an hour long traveling sauna for the ride back to Naples. We all got off that bus drenched in sweat and exhausted from the heat. Happy with the tour guides, not happy with the tour.

Pompei tour was informative and our guide was pleasant. The pace was good but there was little escaping the peak summer sun. By the time we started Herculaneum we were spent and the tour was self-guided with an audio device and number system that was not idiot proof. We retreated to the Antiquarium and gift shop well ahead of time.

Although a long day and very hot this is a great tour. Very informative. These two sites are a must in Naples. There was a lot of pressure to rush through Pompeii as a lot of ground to cover but it’s hard to extend this time. Very disappointed with the disorganisation of splitting the groups for the afternoon. Whilst it appeared Salvatore tried hard and did his best to keep the group informed, progress things and be organised, he wasn’t able to make these decisions as he had to wait for other organisers to complete their section of the tour. I would recommend that the groups aren’t split for afternoon as to chaotic

Our guide for Pompeii was brilliant. He was friendly, had a good sense of humour and was very knowledgeable. I would suggest Herculaneum first and pompeii second if you have a choice as pompeii had more of a story and as the much larger city there was a lot more to see and discover.

i had a confirmed booking for Pompeii and heraclum.n i travel to naples only for this purpose one day before the tour the local guide cancel the trip to heraclum and offer a day at amalfi in the end we left naples by bus at 1000 hours visited pompeii and back to naples and 1330 hours for that i paid 100 euros per person plus the tickets is not worth it do not use this package the should not be trusted

Thetrip was chaotic from start to finish. Lots of phone call to cofiem pick up, but bus was 30 mins late, blamedontraffic which is always bad in Naples. Need to find better pick up points which don’t involve a 30 min u turn to get back onroad. Arrived at Pompeii absolute chaos, too many tour groups. Our GUIDE WAS EXCELLENT, PURE GOLD, tried hard to get is around everything but all was in/out very quickly then wait. Intense heat, and this was in May. Pompeii is enormous, and very dangerous underfoot. My friend slipped hurt her back, but we couldn’t stop. My ear peice stpped working and there was no replacement. Also no air con on bus. Herculaneum was much calmer, smaller and better prepared. Recommend this. Wanted to see Coral and Camio exhibition mentioned in tour but we’re told afterwards we needed to do this alone In our lunch break . Glad to arrive home in one peice. Staff were great but organisation poor.

As an overall experience, the opportunity to visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day was an absolute joy. Both guides were knowledgable and engaging and MADE their tours. There are a number of points which we think could be improved as there is a LOT of waiting around, including a ‘shopping opportunity!’ as well as a very mediocre lunch which would have been nicer as a sandwich and cold drink, allowed us to get on with the tour. Thank you to our driver for bringing us back through the Spanish quarter.
