What To Expect

Your gastronomic adventure begins in the French Quarter. In the afternoon, meet your friendly, food‐loving guide and set off through the lively Vieux Carré (Old Square).

Your first stop is SoBou, part of the acclaimed Commander’s Palace enterprise. Relish as you are treated to chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. If you’d like, grab yourself a drink at the bar before continuing on (own expense). Then, make a quick pit stop at a popular hot sauce bar to sample dozens of hot sauce varieties.

Continue to Leah’s Pralines, where you can sample a Creole classic or a new innovation such as bacon pecan brittle.

As you walk through the French Quarter, colorful signs for traditional po'boys or meat‐filled muffulettas may beckon you. Don’t resist! Your guide leads you to NOLA Poboys. Hear about seafood harvesting in Louisiana before biting into a fresh‐made oyster or shrimp po'boy.

Your final stop is the Creole Cookery for red beans and rice, followed by our dessert course of bananas foster bread pudding. As you indulge in these tasty bites, learn about the many ethnic culinary traditions that have influenced Creole cuisine. Your guide also explains Louisiana’s unique geography and the linguistic origins of classic plates like étouffée and jambalaya.

By the end of the tour, you have a full belly and a better understanding of the fundamental dishes that make up New Orleans cuisine. Please note that the stops are based on availability, and may be subject to change.

Beth was our tour guide and she was absolutely amazing. She was very knowledgeable about New Orleans cuisine. The food was amazing and they give you plenty! You will be so full when it is over. I strongly suggest everyone to book this tour.
Glad we did it !
Mark_H, Aug 2023
The guide Beth was very knowledgeable . We had a group of 16 and too big a group . The three food tasting restaurants were excellent . The visit to the spicy sauce shop & Praline shop was something we did walking around town & pretty much done to fill in time . Overall good but not intimate .
Response from Host, Aug 2023
Glad you enjoyed it, Mark! To clarify: we had 14 people on the tour that day, although we do accept up to 16 people per tour. All the best, Doc
Checking out NOLA

This was a really good tour. Beth was fun and knowledgeable. The spots were good and if I had more time I would revisit a few. I recommend for sure.
Do it!

Mike did an amazing job keeping entertaining with stories and history about the food and how it relates to the local culture. Food was tasty and there was a great variety of stops. I would love to take his cocktail tour on my next visit!
Great tour!
Meghan_E, Jul 2023
Mike was a great tour guide - funny and informative. We loved the gumbo so much, we went back and had it again after the tour.
Underwhelming
Melinda_M, Jul 2023
The food was very underwhelming! New Orleans has amazing food and lots of food that is home to New Orleans but we did not get that experience. Would have loved to try beignets, gator, and even some jambalaya. As for as the tour guide Mike was okay not a conversationalist with my particular group.
Response from Host, Jul 2023
Melinda, As a 9th generation Louisianian I can assure you we served tasty, authentic cuisine representative of New Orleans and Louisiana, to include: Gumbo, muffulettas, boudin, po-boys, bread pudding and more. I spoke with your guide Mike at length about your attendance. Some highlights: - your group was late - your group spent the majority of the tour on phones, including during the explanations of the cuisine - your group complained about the weather - your group complained about the walking - when the food showed up, they asked (sometimes Mike, sometimes the server) if it had pork in it (which Mike had just covered) and 2 of them didn’t eat pork (which we explain 3 times in the tour description) I firmly stand behind my tour, and my wonderful tour guides. If something had actually gone wrong or different on the tour, we would take responsibility for it and do what is necessary to make it right. But that is not the case here. Beth a tour guide is very knowledgeable about the food and history of New Orleans. She is very friendly and professional
Jamez_G, Jul 2023
We learned so much about the food, restaurants in New Orleans and Cajun spices. Stories where and how the spices came from and used for in cooking. It was fun to sample a few bites during the tour! We enjoyed the experience 😃!
hits the nola classics
Arjuna_T, Jul 2023
Our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. She even sent everyone recipes of some of the food sampled. All the food was new orleans classics but some of it rather bland. We even ran into a monsoon but our tour guide did not give up. We got soaked and then had some hot food.
Response from Host, Jul 2023
Hi Arjuna! Glad you enjoyed the guide, but I'm sorry you didn't feel our tour was worth a higher rating. Best, Doc Owner, Doctor Gumbo Tours

We had an amazing time on this tour. Our guide Beth was very knowledgeable and made the day a real good time.
Great for first timers in the city!
Melissa_P, Jun 2023
Absolutely loved this! And our guide was so knowledgeable! It was our first time in New orleans and we came for the food! But it can be overwhelming if your a first timer and don't know where to go or what to order, this tour took care of it! We ate so much and learned so much about the history of what we were eating! 10/10 especially for first timers
My Birthday to New Orleans

We had the best time on this food tour. Our guide Beth, was absolutely wonderful. She had so much knowledge of the history of New Orleans and the places we went to see. Our group was small and we had time to get to know one another which made this experience that much better. The boudin balls at Nola's was my favorite and I highly recommend going there. Thank you Beth for a wonderful day of eating, drinking, and learning about New Orleans.
Great time and a way to sample NOLA food.
Shelley_W, Jun 2023
We found the history of the food and the people groups responsible for the various dishes very interesting. Beth was an excellent guide. Very informative. Attentive to the group and made sure to talk to each person individually. Two of us did this same tour in Feb. 2015. The only thing we missed on this tour was the Cajun dusted pork rinds. It was a great way to spend the afternoon. Highly recommend!
Yummy and interesting
DENISE_E, Jun 2023
Mark was great. Very knowledgeable and had tons of tidbits and recommendations for the group. Really enjoyed his positive demeanor
Great time learning the history of NOLA cuisine
Andrew_S, Jun 2023
Our group of 6 had a great time with our guide, Beth. She was really fun, knowledgeable and gave lots of interesting history of the different cultural influences on New Orleans cuisine. All of the food was great with a nice mix of eating in the restaurants as well as shops to explore. The highlights for us were the gumbo and boudin balls. We will definitely check out there food and cocktail tour on our next trip!
Exceptional experience
