Overview

During your Oahu vacation, enjoy a comprehensive 2-hour surfing lesson near Waikiki with a private instructor. Your professional surfing instructor provides instruction and equipment fittings in the comfort of the deluxe Mercedes van. When ready, hit the beach for a short lesson on land followed by further instruction in the water. Learn to paddle out and stand up on the board, or take your surfing skills to the next level if you know the basics. Photos and video are available for purchase, and hotel pickup and drop-off is included.

Pickup details

We offer free pickup from Waikiki from our four standard pickup locations 10-45 minutes prior to your lesson time: (1) Ilikai Hotel (2) Ambassador Hotel (3) Don Ho Lane Van Depot (4) Hyatt Regency For customers staying at the Ala Moana Hotel, Hale Koa Hotel, Kahala Hotel and Resort, The Ritz Carlton or The Trump Hotel, we may be able to arrange a special pickup closer to the hotel with a notification call or email at least 24 hours in advance. If either the customer or accompanying guest has a handicap or injury and needs to arrange a special pickup, please call or email us with 24 hours notice and we are more than happy to come directly to your hotel.

  • Please come prepared for the lesson by wearing your bathing suit, bringing a towel, and making sure to apply sunscreen ahead of time

  • Not recommended for pregnant travelers
  • Most travelers can participate
  • If you are prone to seasickness, you may want to take a remedy you are accustomed to using about an hour before the lesson (talk to your doctor for recommendations).
  • All of our written materials are also available in Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. We will do our best to accommodate, but cannot guarantee, Japanese, Korean, Spanish or Chinese speaking-instructors without enough advance notice.
  • Complimentary transportation is available from select locations in Waikiki. Exact pick-up location and time will be emailed to you by the supplier. If you do not receive these details 24 hours prior to your lesson, please contact Ohana Surf Project.
  • This is a private tour/activity. Only your group will participate

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.

  • For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

My kids had a blast at their surfing lesson. We did two lessons and all of the instructors were excellent and encouraging. The company was very well organized. Would definitely recommend!

I had a 1 on 1 private lesson with Damian and it was worth every penny. It was my first surfing lesson and Damian was so nice and helpful, i would definetly do it again. The experience was perfectly organized and everybody in the staff was friendly, kind and helpful. The feeling to ride a wave is incredible and super fun. I would recommend the experience to everybody. Mahalo and Aloha to the crew.

6.15.23 The Ohana Surf Project introduction to surfing was very well organized. Good transportation was arranged, safety orientation was conducted, and all necessary gear (sun shirts), and equipment (surf boards) were tailored for each and every student. Lessons were adjusted for each learner….novice through experienced surfer. This is a rigorous, well organized two hour lesson at a Waikiki beach. Every single student was successful! This is an amazing accomplishment for students and teachers alike! I highly recommend this activity if you really was to acquire the skills you need to go surfing! Very well done! Mahalo JoAnn Mayo

Great surfing experience. Safety briefing and instructions were a little brief but I guess doing it might be more helpful than talking. I took my 6 year son and he said he had the best time ever and wanted to go back the next day I booked private 1 on 1 for 2 hours but got tired and a little seasick towards 1.5 hr mark. Was able to ride the waves a few times and so did son. They took great pics for us on go pro.

As a first time surfer at age 52, I was a little nervous. Alana was very helpful in teaching the basics. With every wave she helped me to improve! Was very proud when I was able to stay upon several runs! Alana was very encouraging and celebrated with me when I did well! Very happy with my experience!

Highly recommend booking with the Ohana Surf Project team. I had some questions and they were really quick to respond and answer them. Through the booking to having the lesson, there's a clear line of communication and organisation which was really appreciated. The day of my lesson was really smooth as well, I was picked up on time by the shuttle bus and dropped off on time. They also give you a box to store your things and have your gear picked out for you based off the sizes you sent earlier - that made things so much quicker. The lesson was awesome as well! The intro doesn't go for too long and the instructor makes it really clear and easy to understand. The actual surfing part is so, so much fun and is easy because the conditions in Hawaii are perfect for learning. Having a private lesson was nice because I was able to fit in more waves with the instructor and get some help with paddling out. I had an amazing time and I'll definitely book again next time I go back.

We had the best time! Instructors were wonderful and so encouraging. They set us up for success and made us feel safe in the water. Having a one on one instructor was such a game changer. This was definitely more of a workout than expected, but so worth it and fun!
