Amazing trip to Pompei Our guide Maria was knowledge, funny and very nice! And trip to Sorrento Our guide Alex took us to the most beautiful points in town! So happy with Viator their shore escursion are fantastic and very affordable!
Good - But a bit disorganized
Justin_P, Oct 2018
Tour was good, no significant complaints at all. It just felt a bit disorganized at times with the staff trying to separate who was going where (Pompeii, Sorrento, etc), and that a lot of time was wasted trying to figure this out, which meant less time for Pompeii and Sorrento sights. The lunch provided was really good. The tour guide and included entrance into Pompeii was super helpful as well. 2 hours in Pompeii is not enough, but definitely gives you a good taste.
Bad service

Pompeii was amazing! Our guide, Maria, was very knowledgeable, funny, and informative. We broke off after the Pompeii excursion and went with another couple to Sorento with a different guide. Sorento is beautiful. We will more than likely go here again for a period of time. Thank you, Viator for providing knowledgeable, professional, and timely tours. Your company made our Shore Excursions stress free.

I think for the money, it was ok, but not fantastic or even close to great. I want just first of all say that Maria, the tour guide for the first part of our tour in Pompeii had a very disorganized way of getting this tour started for the day. We had a couple of people who were not in the right location to meet up and get started. We waited for them which was ok. I would want someone to wait for us if we were in the wrong location. After this I was hoping we would be on our way to Pompeii. Instead, we spent at least an hour total between the first amount of time waiting for the people who were in the wrong location and then to move on and find people to pick up along the street to go on the tour and also pick people up at a hotel for a tour. This all was time we could have been spending at Pompeii. Instead we ended up with only about an hour and a half at Pompeii. We really felt rushed and my husband was especially disappointed because he had wanted to see Pompeii his entire life. I feel like at least the extra hour that was wasted with getting there along with all the other picking up of people and trying to sell more tours for more people to join us for this tour was such a waste of our time. The day did get better after the Pompeii tour. Those that were going to Sorrento went and had a nice lunch, pizza, drink and ice cream. Then we had a different guide, Alex for the rest of the afternoon. We took about a 25 minute drive to Sorrento. Alex took us on a walking tour of Sorrento. It was very pretty and the 2nd half of our day was a lot less hectic and more enjoyable. Overall, for the cost, if you plan to charge at least 100 a person, things should be organized and prompt. This was definitely chaotic for the first half of the day.
Too Much for a Shore Excursion
tcelaya2018, Jun 2018
We took this tour as part of a shore excursion, but turned out to be too much for one day and almost missed our ship. Once at Pompeii, the Guide gave us 10 minutes to get use the restroom. A girl decided to use the restroom as the group was gathering to go in; so we all had to wait for her another 15 minutes before we could start. Once we got in to Pompeii, the tour was good and our Guide, Maria was very knowledgeable. The only issue-it is hard to hear with 1 ear piece and you get static if you get too far from the guide. When the Pompeii Tour was done, the group split by the next tour or returning back to the ship. Maria took the Sorrento people to lunch. There was supposed to be 12 for Sorrento but we were missing 3. It took about 30 minutes for Maria to find the missing tourists who had gone with the wrong tour. Then they had to eat, so we were about an hour late getting out, but we were assured that it would not be a problem. The drive to Sorrento was amazing and Maria pointed out items along the way. Maria took us on a short walking tour, and we had about 30 minutes to shop then meet back at the end of the shopping street. One person was still shopping, so we had another 10 minute late start to head out. Because of all these delays, I was getting worried about getting back to the ship on time, but Maria said it would not be a problem. When we left Sorrento, there was an accident that caused traffic to really back up. Again, I was thinking it was going to be a problem, but Maria said that they would have us back before the ship departed. Once we finally got more lanes, the driver made up time and I thought we would actually be OK on time to get back to the ship. At about 5:15, we got in to the Port and I really thought we were going to make it, but that is when traffic came to a complete standstill. We crawled for the next 45 minutes within the Port and by this time I was really stressed that we were not going to make the ship by 6:30. My husband had the GPS for our Port on his phone and I told him

Pompeii is a great place to see! Incredible history!! To set expectations: We got off the cruise ship and walked past all the tour buses in search for our bus, we had to exit the port secure area - where all the Taxis were hanging out. The tour guide Maria was there holding a sign with our name on it. She led us to the main street to get on the bus, which was a bit of a walk. The bus stopped several times along the way to pick up other tourists. We got to Pompeii within 35 minutes. We collected our headphones or earphones so you don't have to crowd the tour guide. There is a chance to stop and use the restroom/bathroom/WC/toilet before we set off on the tour. Wear sensible shoes and if you get thirsty - bring a bottle of water. You will walk up hill, down, and on rock bumpy roads. To say the road is cobble stones - its not the tiny cobbles but large boulders so take care in walking!! The tour lasted about 2 hours and in the end we were exhausted. The tour guide took us to a local restaurant bit of a walk for lunch. The pre-arranged lunch offered pizza or spaghetti with a cold soda, water, or coffee/tea included. There were bathrooms available and were clean too. The group split into two - we paid to go to Sorrento and the other group paid to Mount Vesuvius. Following lunch we took off to Sorrento - a beautiful town located on the side of a hill and overlooked the ocean. WOW it was spectacular! The tour included a stop to taste Limoncello which is made local. On the way back to town if you sit on the ocean side of the bus you may get lucky to catch a glimpse of the sunset. Our lovely tour guide returned us to the ship with an hour to spare before the ship departed. The trip is very well worth it and since we were NOT interested in the cheap tourist shopping we felt the time spent in Sorrento was just right!

This was my first trip to Italy. I booked several excursions through Viator and was very pleased. The excursion to Pompeii was a trip of a life time, I was not disappointed. The coach bus was clean, the driver and tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable, and the sites were interesting. We also visited Sorrento, this is a city I would like to visit again. It was a small quaint city along the Mediterranean countryside, the views of the mountains and M. sea were spectacular. The one recommendation I do have is there should be signage directing customers to the Viator excursion meeting area. There was none resulting in my having to search for the pickup area in a country I was unfamiliar with.

OK, so this was the absolute BEST experience!! Luca was our driver. He was AWESOME!!! was at the port early and from the first moment his only priority was to make us happy and comfortable! He mainly took the back roads so that he could provide us the opportunity to see the TRUE small towns as we were heading to our main destinations. He was a true Tuscan local and had great pride in his region. He WAS THE BEST GUIDE WE HAD THE ENTIRE TRIP!!

We waited an hour on the bus while we picked up other travelers from various hotels. Pompeii was great but Sorrento was NOT worth the drive. Basically we got there and walked through a shopping area and got back in the bus.

Kevin T, Sep 2017
Our group of 7 enjoyed a memorable excursion to Naples and Sorrento on a hot day in August. The large bus between Naples and Pompeii round trip was comfortable, but the air conditioning could have been better, especially in the afternoon. The van between Pompeii and Sorrento was quite pleasant. The bus chaperone and Pompeii tour guide were both very good and did their best to meet our needs. There is not much shade in Pompeii and you sometimes have to stand in the sun in one place while waiting for people in front of you to enter or exit through a doorway, so I recommend a good hat and water. The restaurant in Pompeii is very good considering it serves so many people, and it was reasonably cool inside. In Sorrento we decided to skip the visit to the lemon/limoncello facility, and spend more time walking around Sorrento and having gelato. I recommend asking the guide for clear directions on how to walk to the public vista terrace, as it goes through a charming windy set of streets but is a short 10 minute walk from the main piazza. The view of the Bay of Naples from Sorrento is breathtaking and one that you will always remember!

This was a wonderful tour, and well organized. The only thing was the crowd of cruise passengers coming off the boat and all the tours trying to gather up the passengers. It was just a bit confusing, but, we found each other just fine. The bus ride took us to Pompeii, where the guide gathered us all up and gave us head sets, then there was bit of a wait while some went to the rest room. Be sure to be in hats, and have some water, if you go on a hot day. Pompeii was very crowded, so stay close to your guide. After the tour, we went for Pizza. This was great, and refreshing after a hot day. Then we split up, as some of the of the group chose to hike the volcano, and some took the Sorrento trip. I was with the Sorrento trip. What a lovely drive to this seaside town. We were able to follow our guide as he took us thru the town, and let us stop in a cute shop to taste Limoncelo. I only wished that we had a little more time to discover Sorrento,, all the shops looked inviting.. The tour got us back to the ship with plenty of time left. I highly recommend this tour. I always use Viator.

The ship docked at 8:00 AM. The meeting time for the tour was 9:15 AM. We met and there was another couple who was supposed to join us, but didn't come to the meeting point. We were supposed to wait 10 minutes, but we waited at least 1/2 hr. for them, and finally left. Had a very nice tour of Pompeii. Guide was knowledgeable and very thorough. It started raining during the Pompeii tour, but no one can change the weather. We walked to a pizza restaurant where we had lunch. There was a choice between pizza and spaghetti. Everyone chose pizza, so I can't say how the spaghetti looked. We were at the restaurant for a long time. After everyone was finished eating, we were there for another 30-45 min. Finally got on the road to Sorrento, which was 45 min. drive from Pompeii. It rained the entire time, so traffic was slower than usual, I think. When we arrived at Sorrento we had 35 min. to walk around on our own, before boarding the bus again. We did none of the things described in the tour for Sorrento. It was very slow driving back to the port. There was some flooding in an underpass. The bus made it through the high water just fine. We were back at the port 15 minutes after the all aboard time. But some ship excursions were slowed by the rain also, so many passengers arrived after all aboard. I understand the rain caused a delay in transportation. But leaving the port late and leaving the restaurant late would have given us another hour in Sorrento. In hind site, we wished we had done the half day tour to Pompeii and returned to the ship. The extra time and money to visit Sorrento was not worth it.

Pompeii and Sorento was one of our favorite trips in Italy, very well managed and we loved the whole day. Maria our English speaking guide was amazing, and looked after us well, just enough time as every stop.

Erica T, Jun 2017
BEWARE of timing! Our shipped docked at 7AM and this tour didn't pick up until 9:30 AM. Realistically, we didn't leave the dock until around 10 AM since the group was SO large and we had to wait around for stragglers. This tour spent way too much time in Pompeii and glossed over Sorrento. In our opinion, the tour could have been a lot more balanced if it were not for our tour guide in Pompeii. The guide told us we were only going to spend two hours in Pompeii but it ended up being closer to 3.5 hours. The guide lingered a lot and since it was such a large group, there was a lot of waiting around and delays - the bathroom visit for the group took 30-45 minutes alone. In addition, we had children on the trip and felt very uncomfortable with crude and suggestive jokes our guide made. The guide made a big show of these jokes and encouraged other members of the group to join in and the rowdiness of it all was extremely inappropriate not only for the children but also for the context of the entire tour. We were extremely disappointed by this. To add to this, it was nearly 1:30 PM by the time we made it to lunch. The food was mediocre at best and definitely not a showcase of Italian pizza. Ours was burnt and extremely soggy - the pizza we had during the rest of our time in Italy was MUCH better than what was served to us here. Thankfully, the guide in Sorrento was much better. However, we only got to spend about 40 minutes there. The guide gave us a brisk 30 minute walking tour and gave us 10 minutes to explore, which was definitely not enough time. Had we spent less time in Pompeii listening to crude, inappropriate, and brass comments/jokes, we could have actually enjoyed the beautiful scenery and streets of Sorrento. We suggest you do Pompeii on your own and then make it to Sorrento to spend a bit more time!

The excursion got off to a slow start as we made many stops to pick up travelers. However, once on route Maria the tour guide was fantastic. There was so much to see in Pompeii and Maria provided all the historical details and information of this beautiful village. We then had an authentic Italian lunch at a restaurant across the street. We were provided a choice between pizza or spaghetti and also had a drink choice. It was a bit rushed, but okay as we needed to move on to Sorrento. The drive to Sorrento provided excellent views of this amazing place and once in the city it was equally as gorgeous. It was a quick tour and we had the pleasure of tasting cookies, chocolates and lemoncella from a local vendor. We had about 15 min. to shop on our own. I would have liked a bit more time to browse and shop, but it is understandable that we had to stick to a schedule. Overall, Viator offered a very impressive shore excursion at a competitive rate.
