What To Expect

Book your preferred entrance time to Pompeii and on the day, make your own way to the archaeological site.

Show your pre-booked ticket to bypass the ticket lines and head inside to explore independently. If you wish, collect a complimentary map inside the gate for recommended routes around the ruins.

Covering about 66 hectares (163 acres), the UNESCO-listed site is filled with the ruins of the Roman city of Pompeii, all frozen in time by the ash that showered down on the streets during the 79 AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. In just a few hours, Pompeii’s streets and houses, and many of its people, were completely buried, only to be rediscovered centuries later, in 1748.

Wander the stone-paved streets at your own pace and see the different sites as you wish. View the casts of the victims’ bodies, delve into grand houses and colonnaded gardens, and visit the shells of long-ago shops, temples and other buildings.

Be sure, too, to see highlights like the Forum, Theatre, and Lupanare, the 2-story house that was Pompeii’s brothel, where the walls are still adorned with erotic frescoes.

After exploring the ruins, your experience finishes when you exit the park.

The driving directions are next to impossible to follow, as was the signage the ruins. We followed Parking signs that got us to an area about 20 minutes away. We went to the first entrance we found and the admission kiosk did not recognize the voucher and sent us to what apparently is the main entrance. Then the signage for advanced admission was not prevalent. When we finally got in and found the information office they said we had to go somewhere else to get the tour. We we through part of the ruins by ourselves and read the the Guide for information.

Didn't really get the point in joining a queue to get the entrance ticket, but being low season it was a small queue. What I would highlight is this place is HUGE so do allocate a full day. We allocated half a day and missed so much.

We used the entrance ticket and the Rick Steves app and map to get around. Pompei is a huge place so the app was good to show us the highlights and then we wandered more. We spent almost 5 hours at the ruins.

Pompeii was great but the ticket said we would have skip the line access, but we still had to line up to exchange our tickets at the ticket booth before we could go in. The process of exchanging the tickets took longer than if we'd just bought them at the gate like everyone else was doing.
