Traveler Tips

Unless you are short on time or just aren't that interested in Pompeii, then you need at least 3 hours.
It was an afternoon slot (Starting at 2.30 am) which helped to avoid the rather hot temperatures during the mid day period.
I highly recommend this trip and Ilaria as a guide.

Very Informative. The guide took us the most significant sites within Pompeii. Highly recommend this tour.
Lovely tour with Sonia.
Gabriella_R, Jul 2022
Wonderful tour of Pompeii. Our guide, Sonia, was excellent. We ended up being in a very small group which was fortunate given the crowds. The only negative (that is beyond anyone's control) was the brutal heat. I'd love to go back in a cooler season.
A wonderful tour by an extremely friendly guide.
Megane_Q, Jul 2022
We enjoyed our guide’s expertise in the area, she was extremely knowledge and had plenty of witty remarks which was an amusing touch to her storytelling. She was friendly and made for a lovely guide. I would love to go back one day to spend more time being able to explore all the parts we didn’t have time for. My only wish would be that we could have covered more of Pompeii!
Fantastic tour

Paulo was a fantastic guide. Entertaining engaging passionate and incredibly knowledgeable about Pompeii. He made our tour very enjoyable and interesting and would thoroughly recommend this tour to everyone
Very interesting and informative tour!! Katrina did an excellent job!
DAVID_R, Jun 2022
The new villa recently uncovered that we were shown. The casts of people fleeing. The villas we toured and the many facts of life lived by the people in Pompeii.
Great tour

A fascinating tour from a lovely knowledgeable guide, who made sure we saw all the main attractions but also pointed out interesting details we might not have noticed. She even gave me advice on places to visit whilst we were chatting before the tour started when I told her where we were planning to go the following day.
Great visit to Pompeii!
Beth_L, Apr 2022
The tour provided by Paolo was very educational and we explored more places in Pompeii than expected. His tour was lighthearted and he was flexible in guiding us through Pompeii often selecting aspects based on the questions from the group. It was a full 3 hour tour!

Francesco made our tour perfect. He had a mixed group of people and made the content accessible for all. He carefully adapted explanations for younger ears when necessary and gave us full detailed accounts of life in ancient Pompeii. He also pointed out original and reconstructed parts of the city and happily took photos for us. The tour itself is fascinating. It requires some stamina as it is three hours of constant walking but the city is big enough to keep you interested throughout. I would not recommend doing this without a guide.
Highly recommend!

Wonderful tour! Our guide Paulo was amazing and was full of knowledge of Pompeii. Our tour last for 3 1/2 hours. I would highly recommend!
Archeological Wonder
julieD8339FG, Oct 2019
We had an amazing visit to Pompeii!! This archeological wonder was brought to life by our exceptional guide, Francisco. With his background in archaeology, he was able to share the history and the insight of one who has worked on actual excavation. He willingly answered questions, as we visited various sites within the city. The town of Pompeii is huge, and having someone with experience, knowledge, and background will make the the visit so much more interesting and informative. We enjoyed it immensely. I would strongly recommend this tour if you plan to see Pompeii!

Pompeii is so huge with so much to see that the 2 hour tours just would not be enough. Even in 3 hours with an expert guide we only seemed to scratch the surface, but Hilary’s passion and authenticity brought everything to life. She truly loves this place. I had no idea we would see and learn so much. Totally incredible and a highlight of our 3 weeks touring Italy.

Informative guide of a Beautiful Piece of History
Phil_C, Sep 2019
Myself and my partner booked ourselves onto this tour in September 2019. It was an afternoon slot (Starting at 2.30 am) which helped to avoid the rather hot temperatures during the mid day period. We traveled from Salerno to the Pompeii on the train and caught the 3 EURO shuttle immediately outside the station to the meeting point near the main entrance to Pompeii. Our guide was on hand to meet us, with radios to listen to the commentary as we toured. The guide was very friendly and spoke perfect English. The tour progresses at a steady pace, capturing the essential aspects of life in Pompeii and the tragedy that befell it. Questions were taken and answered informatively. There is a lot to take in around Pompeii however this tour will take you direct to the essential viewings. Great if you are short on time. Tour took around 3 hours, with plenty of walking. Overall this was a great informative tour and the guide was extremely knowledgeable. Certainly worth the money. Would highly recommend.

Fantastic Tour of Pompeii Ruins!!
William_M, Jun 2019
This tour was exactly what we were hoping it would be. One reason we picked this tour is because it was 3 hours. Many of the tours we looked at were only 2 hours, and we didn't think that was enough time to see as much of Pompeii as we wanted. It turned out we were right. The 3 hours flew by and we still didn't see everything. The tour ended at 1:30, and we ended up staying until 4:30 on our own. We also picked this tour because it had a 10:30 start time allowing us plenty of time to travel from Rome that morning. Our tour guide, Francesca, was fantastic. She didn't stop talking for the entire 3 hours, and I mean that in the most positive way. She's trained as an archaeologist and was extremely knowledgeable about not only the Pompeii ruins but about the history of the area and its people as well. She didn't waste any time and we saw a lot in the 3 hours we were with her. The headsets provided worked perfectly and we could hear everything very clearly. We went on tours of the Vatican and the Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine Hill, and this tour was easily the best. The others were good, but this one was a level above, and that was due in large part to Francesca, her knowledge and her ability to present it in a way that was interesting, engaging and easy to understand. And we feel this way in spite of the fact it was brutally hot - 96 degrees the day of our visit. Fortunately, there are fountains scattered throughout the ruins and Francesca made sure we all had time to fill our water bottles whenever we passed one (be sure to take a bottle with you that you can fill). I would highly recommend this tour to anyone thinking of booking a tour to see the Pompeii ruins. Unless you are short on time or just aren't that interested in Pompeii, then you need at least 3 hours. And with this tour, you get to see a lot in the 3 hours you have. Note that this tour didn't visit the House of the Faun, the Amphitheater or the House of Giulia Felice - three things that are definitely worth seeing. The Amphitheater and the House of Giulia Felice are at the far end of Pompeii so it's easy to understand why they weren't included. But since we had already planned to stay on our own anyway, it worked out perfectly for us as they were easy to locate on our own. If you're thinking about booking a tour of Pompeii, this is an excellent choice!

This is a great way to learn about Pompeii and make sure you see all the top areas of such a vast site. Our guide was an archeologist so very knowledgeable. We went on a very hot day - take plenty of water, although there is a fountain where the water is safe to drink I didn't really enjoy the taste of it I'm fussy. There are different houses open in the morning and afternoon, so if you want to see something specific do your research beforehand. We were happy with the ones we saw. There are a few restaurants/cafes between the site entrance and train station that are a good place to have lunch and buy cold water. The train was hot and crowded. We missed out on seats so be prepared to stand for the 30 minute journey unless you go at a less-busy time.

We were extremely lucky: the weather was glorious a sunny 17C on Christmas Eve, we had our guide just for us very small group indeed, and Pompeii was eerily empty of the usual tourist throngs. We spent almost 4 hours with Francisco, who was very personable, funny and knowledgeable. We were thankful to have booked this tour as the site is so vast and indications are sparse, so it is hard to visit on your own. We arrived by car and didn't have any recommendations for parking. We ignored the shady-looking parking lots along the road, and were rewarded with an official one at the end, all the way up, next to the entrance of the site. You park in an orange grove... can't get any better than that!

Excellent an insightful tour of Pompeii - Paulo our guide from Walks of Italy, brought everything to life ! You could picture life in bustling settlement which made it more poignant and heartbreaking the unfortunate fate that befell them all ! It is such a vast site that it's virtually impossible to see everything in 1 go so will definitely return soon ! Easy to forget it's more than an archeological site and that real people tragically lost their lives here but Paulo gave us the human side so could appreciate achievements and how even modern engineering is all based in Roman history ! A highlight for us was the amphitheatre - so impressive ! Fascinating tour - 3 hours flew by - even in scorching heat. So much to see and Paulo was never without an answer to any of our questions !! One of best places to get perfect picture of Vesuvius ! Must see tour - totally recommend. Many thanks was a high point of our trip to Campania !

Absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Touring Pompeii seemed a bit daunting - so much to see and I'm so glad that I decided to book this tour the night before. Ilaria was our guide and she was amazing an archeologist, no less! She had us enraptured with stories, history, archeology, culture and more. The tour was an excellent value, many of us chatted afterwards and agreed that the three hours went by fast. What a special treat and I'll definitely look for other walks of Italy/New York/Paris/Turkey in future, and in particular Ilaria.

This was a dream of mine, to see the ruins of Pompeii. Our guide was Serena and she was so informative, I was truly in awe of the place. We did have a problem with the times, we had 1:30pm on our printed voucher, but the tour didn't start until 2:30 and I had no emails to suggest this change. Perhaps an error on Viators account? I'm not sure. We were shuffled from the top of the stairs to the bottom of the stairs quite a few times by the local tour companies, only to find out that our tour was actually part of the Mt Vesuvius bus tour/Pompeii tour. Once the tour bus arrived with the others, we waited while they had lunch at the local diner and were soon separated into small groups of 15. The audio guide is a must! There is so much to see and without their information, we wouldn't of known what buildings were homes, stores or baths. Such a remarkable experience, the city is absolutely incredible. We stayed locally for one night and were warned frequently by the locals and by our driver from Naples airport that pick pocketers were riff in this area, but we had no problems at all. We had our belongings in our front pockets and were always aware of our personal space. We met a beautiful man at one of the stalls in front of the bottom entrance you need to walk about 20 mins to collect your ticket, at the top entrance near the train station. His English was broken but he made such an effort to assist us in finding the train station. Our hotel Hotel Del Sole had a restaurant that overlooked the ruins, and the food was to die for! Highly recommend this tour and the hotel, but Pompeii really is a dirty, rundown place. Maybe stay in Sorrento if you are thinking of staying for a long period of time, we only went for the ruins. :
Amazing 3-Hr Tour

Was so lucky to do a tour with Ilaria, an actual archaeologist of the Pompeii excavation site! Including me there was only 5 people on the tour and she answered all our questions, no matter what it was about! She made Pompeii come to life with colorful stories and anecdotes about the people and businesses there and explained in very vivid detail their way of life. She also spoke about the Vesuvius eruption and why we have Pompeii today! An absolute must!! Thank you Ilaria, you were a highlight of my trip!!
