What To Expect

Meet your guide in Vatican City to begin your wheelchair-friendly tour of the Vatican complex, home to one of the world's greatest art collections. You’ll be provided with a headset, which allows you to hear your guide’s commentary throughout your tour.

With your skip-the-line ticket, head past the entrance line and straight inside to start your exploration in the Pinacoteca Gallery, where you’ll see revered works of art like Raphael’s Transfiguration, Caravaggio’s Deposition from the Cross and Da Vinci’s unfinished St Jermone. Learn from your guide about the history of the gallery, which was created for Pope Pius XI, and the stories behind the paintings.

Next, visit the Chiaramonti Museum to gaze in wonder at the approximate 1,000 statues and sculptures of cherubs, gods and emperors that make up this arched gallery, founded in the early 1800s by Pope Pius VII. Hear about some specific pieces from your guide before continuing to the Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo’s iconic frescoed ceiling and the place where cardinals gather when it's time to elect new popes. Before you enter, your guide will provide a little insight about the chapel and Michelangelo's famed works inside like The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgement (talking isn’t permitted in the chapel). Your tour ends at the Sistine Chapel.

Please note: A valid disability identification card must be presented on the day of your tour. Those without walking disabilities, or those with a disability level of less than 74%, will be required to pay the entrance fee of approximately 23 euros (adult) or 16 euros (child) in addition to the cost of this guided tour. The entrance fee can be paid for in cash at the beginning of the tour.

Traveler Tips

The Vatican is a hard tour for those with mobility issues just from the sheer size of the museum, but Marcius, made it comfortable for my mother to truly enjoy herself.

Unmitigated disaster….don’t do it…
Margaret_G, Jun 2023
Guide didn’t show. Agency attempted to fill in with non authorized tour guide after half hour who said they would “bring” us to another tour guide….at the Vatican… up a hill with broken concrete and cobbles…...but she couldn’t confirm the wheel chair would be allowed. This was a private, wheelchair accessible tour that cost over 600 dollars. Unmitigated disaster. When we got to the Vatican, the replacement tour guide wasn’t there. The agency employee said she understood that we were disappointed, but that there wasn’t anything she could do and suggested we join one of the tours that scalpers were aggressively hawking right outside…..you know the one next to the guys selling scarves and umbrellas and obviously credible, specifically handicapped tours…. We walked/pushed to the Vatican cab stand and took a cab (25 euros) back to our hotel (near the coliseum. Waste of 50 euro round trip cab trip. Waste of 1.5 hours of our valuable time in Rome. No one on the ground is empowered to do anything and when pressured to maintain the tour, they most definitely will attempt to bait and switch you and just have you accept it with “there’s nothing we can do”. Terrible experience. Absolutely avoid. Ruined the day in Rome.
Private Wheelchair Tour

How easy it was to meet our guide - he took us through the Vatican with ease and had a tremendous knowledge. I had sustained an injury to my knee so I had to be in a wheelchair which was difficult enough but our guide made sure we had the best experience we could.
beautiful tour and super tour guide. It really was helpful having the wheel chair and essentially a private tour!

Great tour for anyone with mobility needs!

Marcius was an incredible guide. My mother had a walker and he constantly ensured her comfort. He is a historian with a great sense of humor so the tour was both academic but he also told the best anecdotal stories that had us laughing. The Vatican is a hard tour for those with mobility issues just from the sheer size of the museum, but Marcius, made it comfortable for my mother to truly enjoy herself. It’s been the highlight of the trip for us! Thank you!
Meravigliosa!

Had an incredible tour of the Vatican with Monica. She was so knowledgable and knew how to navigate us through the museum easily despite the crowds. Grazie! Grazie! Grazie!
stupendous

Our guide Ian was excellent, efficient, and kind. He was incredibly knowledgeable and navigated the whole tour for us with ease. He pushed my wheelchair for me and made sure I saw everything. Bravo. I can't recommend this highly enough.
A very nice tour

Wheelchair tour was very nice. Chapel is beautiful. Still a distance to get to wheelchair rental. You should bring a pusher if you need one. A couple of steep ramps. Passing by the large crowds was very helpful. Guide was very nice.
Use a wheelchair for this tour
John_L, Jul 2018
We took a small group of friends on this tour, one in a wheelchair, one using a walker and one walking but with a bad hip. The tour guide was knowledgeable, patient and helpful, pulling the walker for long distances. The problem with this tour is the distance, for handicapped individuals trying to walk it (and the inevitable crowds). Overall, the distance was certainly several miles; ok for the person being pushed in a wheelchair, but exhausting for the person using a walker or walking with a bad hip. Viator should strongly recommend that all mobility challenged persons use or obtain a wheelchair from the Vatican Library for this tour.

Our family had a fantastic time on this tour. Our guide, Davide, was outstanding. Extremely knowledgeable and personable. We arrived later than our scheduled time but Enjoy Rome just moved us to the next available time slot. Anyone thinking of having a Vatican tour should feel quite comfortable choosing this company for the experience.

We had an excellent tour of the Vatican. Our guide Sarah was so knowledgeable and really made it easy to navigate by wheelchair. I never could have made the tour without the wheelchair access and felt fortunate to have such an informative and efficient guide.
