What To Expect
After making your own way to the San Diego Zoo on the day of your choice, you can head into the zoo's visitor center to pick up a map and plan your route through this acclaimed zoo. The animals live in spacious and beautifully designed enclosures that replicate their natural habitats. The koala and giant panda exhibits are always popular, as are the orangutans and siamangs that climb around in lush forest settings.
Other highlights include the Tiger River exhibit, which features a realistic Asian rainforest environment, and the Gorilla Tropics, which recreates a lush African rainforest. Zoo keeper talks take place at regular intervals every day, with the experts introducing animals such as giraffes, elephants, wolves, lions or jaguars, and more. In the animal nursery, you might get to see some of the zoo’s newest arrivals.
Kids enjoy petting small tame critters in the Petting Paddock and four different play zones provide a safe and entertaining spot to climb and explore.
As you make your way through the zoo, note the extensive gardens — some of the plants growing there supply ingredients for the specialized diets of particular zoo residents.

The zoo, itself is quite hilly, making it difficult to walk in places.
It was a perfect time of year as it was cool and sunny.

Fun Visit
Joan_R, Sep 2023
I’ve always wanted to see The San Diego Zoo since the days of Joan Embry on Johnny Carson. It was as wonderful as expected. Enjoyed the bus tour and the aerial view. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Love the Ease of Viator and the Zoo

Hillary_C, Sep 2023
A must see for anyone visiting San Diego!! We easily spent 6 hours there and could have spent more time. Beautiful grounds and incredible animals.
A roaring good time!
Teresa_H, Sep 2023
Love having free access to various transit options to navigate the zoo. We took advantage of the guided tour when we first arrived. We then took the Kangaroo bus to hop on/off at various sections of the zoo that we wanted to further explore. Lots of volunteers to help guide you and answer questions as you walk throughout the zoo complex and numerous food and shopping options located throughout the zoo.

New experience
Kim_B, Aug 2023
Grandsons were never in San Diego before much less at this wonderful zoo. They enjoyed it! We also took our other grandsons here 5 years ago with the same results.
Beautiful zoo
makenwaves970, Aug 2023
We had a great time. The free transportation around the park was great as we where short on time and where able to see everything we wanted to. Wish they had water bottle refilling stations. Paying $6 for a bottle of water is quite expensive. They will refill it for you., but this is not explained and the water they refill it with has a high chlorine teste and was undrinkable to us.
SD Zoo was great!
John_H, Aug 2023
We enjoyed the options that were available to move around the park. The tour bus, the sky gondola, and the kangaroo bus made our experience much better. We were able to see more and explore all the areas of the zoo.
Awesome and so fun

I absolutely love the zoo this is my 3rd time there and it never gets old, loved all the animals and food is good but expensive. Literally spend a whole day here is so worth it.
I would recommend

Beautiful Zoo
Lots of animals, I do feel sad for some as they can’t live the normal life of a wild animal.
Surprisingly the food restaurants had great food. Freshly cooked while you wait.
Zoo
Gaye_H, Jun 2023
Good experience. Didn’t see some animals that I would’ve expected to see. Map was difficult to follow. Only 3 elephants, so was a little disappointing.
Komodo dragons weren’t outside.
San Diego Zoo was Great!
chervilstxrrcom, Jun 2023
The zoo was great and educational. The weather was great and it was crowded (Father's Day), but we had a wonderful time.
Take the free bus tour
Jennifer_M, Jun 2023
Get a paper map. The app is not great. When you arrive, you can easily hop on a bus fir a 35 minute bus tour. This is a great way to see a lot of critters. After you are done, go explore. The paths are very windy and it is east to miss things, so a paper map is essential we saw lots of animals we could not at our "home" zoo. Took us about 4 hours
Was very disappointed...
Ronald_V, Jun 2023
Was very disappointed with several exhibits were closed, such as the polar bears, otters, elephants all at the same time, for the price of admission you would like to think the exhibit maintenance would be done after hours
Great time!
Lauren_S, Jun 2023
It was our daughter’s first time to a large zoo and she loved it!!
We walked all around and enjoyed the whole experience!
Maybe Zoo,s are now a thing of the past .?.
Andrew_C, Jun 2023
As zoo,s go this is done very well. However there are too many large predators in small enclosures. Particularly the some of the big cats and Polar bears . I understand the argument of preserving threatened species but there is a dilemma here of quality of life for the animals verses preserving species . I am not being a bleeding heart liberal , I understand why some would enjoy it ,but not for me
The San Diego Zoo is Spectacular!
Cheryl_J, May 2023
Located in the historical Balboa Park the San Diego Zoo is the home of a variety of exotic animal species. A guided bus comes free with general admission. I recommend taking the bus tour to get an overview of the Zoo. I thoroughly enjoyed the hummingbird exhibit and the reptile house. Make sure you wear some good walking shoes! There's so much to see!
So happy
lynn_s, May 2023
Having the mobile tickets in advance saved having to stand in line to purchase or pick up.
The zoo experience was great!
Every staff person was helpful and knowledgeable about the animals, and the love and compassion they have towards them is obvious.
We spent the ENTIRE day there!
Highly recommend!
