What To Expect

Find your way to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, known to most locals as the Legion of Honor, located in the Richmond District of San Francisco. Be sure to bring your camera for views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Pacific Ocean, and the Marin Headlands from the surrounding area.

The impressive building is a replica of Paris' the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur, gifted to the city by Alma de Bretteville Spreckels in the early 20th century. Spend some time viewing the stunning exterior and architecture before presenting your admission ticket and proceeding inside.

Walk through the collection of over 124,000 works at your leisure, stopping to take in the sculptures, paintings, ancient art from the Mediterranean basin, and the largest collection of works on paper in the Western United States. Must-see pieces include an original cast of Rodin's 'The Thinker' and the flawlessly restored Salon Doré of the Hôtel de la Trémoille, one of the finest examples of French Neo-classical architecture in the United States.

Special Exhibits are not included in your general admission ticket, but are available as upgrades.

Legion of Honor

With your admission ticket in hand, head to the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (known informally as the Legion of Honor), located in Lincoln Park overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, where the Pacific spills into San Francisco Bay. A gift of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels to the city of San Francisco in the early 1900s, this stunning building is a replica of the Palais de la Légion d’Honneur along the Seine in Paris, and its epic location makes this hidden gem one of the city’s greatest treasures. Explore the museum’s extensive collection of more than 124,000 works of art, including European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts; ancient art from the Mediterranean basin; and the largest collection of works on paper in the American West. The permanent collection reflects a history of patronage by its founders, whose focus was 18th- and 19th-century French art. Don’t miss one of the 28 original casts of Rodin's The Thinker statue and the must-see Salon Doré of the Hôtel de la Trémoille exhibit, reopening in the fall of 2013. This is one of the finest examples of French neoclassical interior architecture in the world. Be sure to bring your camera, because after your time at the museum, you can walk a bit down the road for incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands in the distance. Upgrade: Audio Tour or Special Exhibits Upgrade to include the audio tour at the Legion of Honor for a more in-depth experience, or enjoy entrance to its fascinating Special Exhibits.

Legion Visit
Ruth_D, Mar 2023
We went for the John Singer Sargent exhibit and enjoyed that very much. But, I still LOVE the resident exhibits at the Legion. Always comforting to see Bouguereau’s The Broken Pitcher and Makovsky’s, Russian Bride…

Being there with family who truly enjoyed the museum as the permanent instillations were beautifully juxtaposed with the temporary exhibit.
Great show, but Viator is a parasite.

I was charged an extra $30 I was not expecting because I used Viator instead of going to the Legion of Honor website. I will avoid using Viator in the future.

Fortunately, I’ve been to the museum, but years ago. We weren’t able to attend because of an event in the area that we didn’t learn about until it was too late.

Please don’t buy tickets through Viator like I did. Buy then through the museum directly like I should have. Viator customer service is terrible. I will never deal with Viator again.

The tour was as described and the Legion of Honor as always had a good exhibit. However the ticket I printed on line from you was no end of trouble. We had to speak with four different people and no noe recognized or knew what the ticket was even thought it contained a bar code. They finally let us in and still did not know it included an audio tour but eventually did let us have it.
