What To Expect

Muir Woods National Monument is a must-see destination on any visit to the San Francisco Bay Area. Just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, the protected nature reserve is home to one of the world’s last remaining coastal redwood forests.

Choose from a morning or afternoon departure. Stop at a vista point for a fantastic perspective of the Golden Gate and Alcatraz, and wind through the rolling emerald hills of the Marin Headlands to arrive at Muir Woods. Stroll along forest paths surrounded by the giant redwood trees, some of which stretch as high as 250 feet (76 meters) and date back nearly 800 years.

After Muir Woods, take a short drive to the artistic bayside village of Sausalito. Capture wonderful photos of the San Francisco skyline during a stroll along the waterfront, pop into one of the many art galleries and grab a cappuccino or ice cream at a local café (own expense).

Your tour concludes with drop off at either of the two departure points or choose the option of taking the Sausalito ferry back to San Francisco (Pier 41).

Union Square (Pass By)

Departing the heart of Union square, the coach makes its way to the Golden Gate Bridge. On your way to the Golden Gate Bridge, travelers will see: Union Square: Theatres, shopping, hotels

Van Ness Avenue (Pass By)

Traveler Tips

Parking at Muir Woods is so limited (and requires a timed permit) that the tour bus is the best way to go.
Parking at Muir is poor so this one combined with the ferry return is a nice half day ending up at Fisherman’s Wharf.
Just be prepared that the road to get there is really curvy, so if you get carsick, be sure to take motion sickness tablets before going.

Muir Woods visit
Sarah_D, Feb 2023
It was a very beautiful day and we enjoyed our morning at Muir Woods Memorial Park. Before we entered the park the bus driver gave us a history and instruction in where to go. Once in the park we were amazed of the beauty and happy that we made the trip. It is will worth it!!
Response from Host, Feb 2023

Excellent tour
Nicholas_R, Jan 2023
This was an excellent tour - the tour guide was excellent. Very organised and knowledgeable. I had a great trip, although this trip is probably over-priced given it primarily involves transport + entry to the woods which is cheap anyway.
Response from Host, Feb 2023
Dear Nichola, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are glad to see that you enjoyed our Muir Woods/Sausalito tour. It was a pleasure serving you. We hope to serve you again soon.
Easy way to reach Muir Woods from SF
Visnja_J, Jan 2023
The tour was carefully organized with stops at the Golden Gate Bridge North Vista Point, Muir Woods, and Sausalito. Muir Woods are difficult to reach from SF unless you rent a car, so this is probably the easiest way. The stop in Sausalito was a bit too short but we could have returned by Uber/Lyft or taken the ferry. Overall, I highly recommend
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Visnja_J, We are glad to see that you enjoyed our Muir Woods/Sausalito tour. Thank you for giving a 5-star to us. It was a pleasure serving you. We have a limited time to stay in Sausalito and a good option is to get the ferry back to SF, as you mentioned. We hope to serve you again soon!
Must do!
Monaia_O, Jan 2023
The Muir woods is so beautiful and Serene. If I did it again I would do the first tour at 7:40am, stay is Sausalito longer, and take the ferry back to San Francisco. Sausalito was beautiful. Make sure to stop by Lamppert's for Ice cream
Response from Host, Jan 2023

Great half day trip!
Christina_C, Jan 2023
Such a fun trip! Our tour guide was knowledgeable about San Francisco, Muir Woods and Sausalito. A great half day trip to enjoy nature and sight see! We got the bike rental after as well. I personally want more time in Muir Woods on my next visit!
Response from Host, Jan 2023

Redwoods on your bucket list? Definitely a must do!
Jill_R, Jan 2023
If seeing the Redwoods has been on your bucket list, like it was mine, definitely take this tour! The redwood forest is just breathtaking. And the town of Sausalito is so charming! We ate at Spinnaker in Sausalito, which I also highly recommend for it's beautiful, setting and view. That restaurant recommendation came from our amazing bus driver/tour guide, who knew so much information about the area and its history and its current state of affairs! The whole trip was entertaining from start to finish. We opted for the ferry return, which is super super easy, and just beautiful to be on the water and seeing all the sights from that perspective. The ferry ride is only about 20 to 25 minutes so it's probably even a little shorter than the bus. Also… If you change your mind and decide to take the bus back after you told them you were taking the ferry that's no problem you could just jump on the bus, but you won't have as much time in Sausalito, as if you take the ferry back.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Jill, Thank you so much for such a detailed review and for giving us a 5-star to our Muir Woods and Sausalito tour. We are glad to see that you had a great time with us. It was a pleasure serving you. We hope to welcome you back again soon!
Bus smells like pee
Hannah_A, Jan 2023
Bus smelled awful! Seats had greasy handprints and the whole bus smelled of pee. The tour itself would’ve been nice but having to ride in a small bus that smelled like pee has been all over it made it awful.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Hanna, First of all, thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry about this situation and we reported this to our team to take precautions. Accept our apology! Sincerely, Gray Line.
The Forrest was beautiful...
Alan_S, Jan 2023
The Forrest was beautiful & wet after recent rains the bus was a little under average as some of the seats were wet obviously due to roof escape hatches leaking & continued to drip on me whilst travelling this needs to a addressed if it was raining it would very uncomfortable. I did point it out to driver who didn’t seem to care.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Alan, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are really sorry about the issue with our bus and sorry again if our tour guide didn't meet your expectations. We addressed this situation with our team and we will take precautions about this problem. Sincerely, Gray Line.
Tour van needs cleaning
S_M, Jan 2023
We did a version of this tour in the past with another company. Our parents were visiting this time, and they were booked, so we took the tour from this company instead. The tour drive was meh, and the driver and his commentary were meh. What was not ok was the stench in the tour vehicle; it was a mixture of sweat and dirt. The company seemed oblivious about it despite the irony of mentioning at the start of the tour that please take your belongings with you since we send our vehicles for disinfection per COVID protocols. Before our trip, I also noticed another recent review that mentioned this, but I thought it was a one-off. Clearly not. Basically, for us, it was a glorified transport to Muir Woods and Sausalito. Apologies if this review seems harsh, but in this day and age, it is reasonable to expect a clean vehicle. Muir Woods is a magical place. No matter how good or bad a tour (company) is, the trip always becomes lovely because of the beauty of Muir Woods and cuteness of Sausalito. Hence the 4 stars.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear S_M, Thank you for sharing your feedback and being so open about it. We are really sorry that our tour guide didn't meet your expectations. After the tours, our policy is to deep clean all of our buses, however, we have been facing a lot of rain in San Francisco and because of that, our buses might be a lit bit wet. We do apologize if this made you feel uncomfortable on the way to Muir Woods. We reported this internally and we'll take action about it. We hope you will see us again! Sincerely, Gray Line.
Not exactly a half-day
Susan_P, Jan 2023
The bus ride was very comfortable and the driver very knowledgable. it was unfortunately a holiday week so traffic was much heavier than usual, no fault of the tour. However this was described as a half-day tour of approximately 4 hours when in actuality it was more like 6+. We booked the 1030 excursion and ended up taking a ride-share back to San Francisco to get back in time. So if you under any kind of time constraint I would book the earlier tour. It was totally worth it. Both destinations were beautiful even though we had to cut Sausalito short.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Susan, Thank you for sharing your experience with us and giving us a 5-star review on our Muir Woods and Sausalito tour. Due to unpredictable circumstances, our tour could be longer than expected. Because it was a holiday weekend, the tour was longer than 4 hours. We feel sorry that you had to spend a short time in Sausalito because of that. It was a pleasure serving you! We hope that you are coming to see us again.
The Golden Gate Bridge...
Cristina_V, Jan 2023
The Golden Gate Bridge view was beautiful and Muir Woods was very scenic - lovely mostly flat walk with towering trees and a babbling creek.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Cristina, We are so happy to see that you had a great time on our tour to Muir Woods and Sausalito. We appreciate your valuable feedback. Thank you for choosing Gray Line. We hope to serve you again soon!
Best trip ever!

It rained on our trip but it still was amazing. It brought out a new life to the woods and the town of Sausalito.
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Dear Cristop, We are glad to see that you could enjoy and appreciate Muir Woods and Sausalito even though it was raining. Those are incredible places to be. It was a pleasure serving you and we hope to serve you again. Happy New Year!
Day of Joy

Meh - take it or leave it. You might find better options.
Suyog_P, Dec 2022
The trip mostly accomplishes what it sets out to do. In fact, the stop that allows you to take pictures of the Golden Gate bridge is definitely a nice to have. However, the return journey more or less left me a bit sour. The stop in Sausalito is really for lunch, and if you do choose to eat, while there are plenty of options to choose from, they're all quite upscale. A quick and cheap bite is out of question here. The other part that annoyed me a tad bit was the constant reminder to tip the guide and the driver. At one point the guide said of the driver, "Didn't he do a great job of driving us back home safely?"... like isn't that his job though? I get that tipping culture is huge in the US, but the constant asking and reminding was a bit much.
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Dear Suyog, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are sorry that your experience didn't meet your expectations this time. Sausalito is a beautiful and charming coastal small town, an excellent place to visit local shops, walk around and have a nice meal. There are some cheap options that you can find there as well. Sincerely, Gray Line San Francisco.
Muir Woods Revisited
Sandra_C, Dec 2022
The bus driver as well as the nature of Muir Woods had traveled to the Woods 30 years ago. It was nice to come back and see it untouched.
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Dear Sandra, We are happy to see that you enjoyed your time again at Muir Woods. We were happy to have you with us and it was a pleasure serving you. We hope to welcome you back again soon.
This tour went flawlessly
Kim_M, Dec 2022
I have only good things to say about this. We considered renting a car to visit Muir Woods and are glad we didn't. The timing of this experience was perfect - a quick break to see the bridge and visit the restroom, 90 minutes at Muir Woods (which was plenty), and then 90 minutes in Sausolito. The bus driver gave history of the area as well as recommendations on which path to take at Muir and where to eat in Sausolito. We opted to take the bus back to our pickup point and were happy with that decision too.
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Dear Kim, We are so happy to see that you had a great time with us at Muir Woods and Sausalito. We were happy to have you with us. Thanks for choosing Gray Line to bring you to those places. We hope to serve you again soon.
A miracle
David_P, Dec 2022
We are grateful to all people who managed to preserve this wonder for future generations and save it from extinction. The park is a miracle.
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Dear David, We are so fortunate to have Muir Woods preserved. This is definitely a magical place. Thank you for choosing Gray Line to take you there. We hope to welcome you back again soon.
A must if you're in San Francisco – Muir Woods is special
Ross_P, Dec 2022
We took this tour back in May 2022. We’re glad we did as Muir Woods is special. We went with the 10:40am pickup to allow time for coffee and breakfast, a wise choice as there were limited options until Sausalito. The tour bus was very comfortable and our guide/driver was great. Can’t remember his name, but he was funny and very knowledgeable. The trees in Muir Woods are a sight to behold. We would’ve liked longer there but tour groups are limited to 90 minutes. If you want to stay for longer and do some hikes (we did after getting there) consider alternative transport options. After the woods we were taken to Sausalito. A pretty town with great views of San Francisco across the bay, but quite touristy and expensive. Avoid the naff overpriced ice cream: 20 dollars for 2 scoops each of flavourless iced matter 😮. We chose the option to return to SF by ferry, which we recommend as you get a great view of the Golden Gate bridge (if the weather’s on your side). If you’re wearing a hat, keep hold of it.
Response from Host, Dec 2022
Dear Ross, We were blown away by your positive words, we really appreciate the time you took to write such a detailed review! Thank you so much for sharing your feedback and we are happy to see that you had a great time in Muir Woods and Sausalito. We hope to welcome you back again soon.
