What To Expect

After hotel pickup in Sedona or Flagstaff, relax in your comfortable climate-controlled van for the scenic drive to Monument Valley, which takes approximately three hours from Flagstaff. Along the way, your guide shares informative commentary about the geology, wildlife and history of the American Southwest, and points out landmarks that you pass.

Take in the sights as you travel through the San Francisco Volcanic field, Cameron Trading Post and the vast expanse of the Navajo Nation with the Painted Desert in the distance. When you arrive at Monument Valley, located on the Utah border and part of the Colorado Plateau, admire your first views of the otherworldly landscape. Stop for lunch (own expense) at a restaurant with views and choose from a menu of Navajo and classic American dishes.

After lunch, set out to see more of Monument Valley, known for the red sandstone buttes that tower up to 1,000 feet (304 meters) above ground level, with many basins, rock formations and cactus in between. Your guide takes you on the 17-mile drive to get closer to the soaring buttes and admire different perspectives on the stunning red-rock landscape.

As your tour the area, your guide provides insight into Navajo culture and traditions, along with the geography and natural history of the region. Keep your camera handy for endless photo ops of the breathtaking landscape, with your guide there to steer you to best vantage points. Various Hollywood directors have been inspired to film movies here, including several Westerns starring John Wayne.

At the end of a memorable tour to Monument Valley, your guide returns you to your hotel in the early evening.

An excellent day trip and tour guide!
Rachael_W, Jan 2023
Stanton is the man! He has great knowledge and can answer any questions you might have about the area. He offered water bottles and candy throughout the day, made sure all of us were cozy, and drove well. He knew all of the stops to take us on and took photos, too! I highly recommend Stanton as your guide for the day! Thank you!

Sheldon did an amazing job of educating us on every aspect of Navajo culture and geology and history/culture. The monuments are incredible. You will be in total awe. Our lunch stop enabled us to enjoy Navajo cuisine which was plentiful and delicious. It was a very long day but definitely worth it!

The Monument Valley is really something to see. I did expect the trip to be long...was told 12 hours due to long drive time.... so I was prepared for 12 hours start to finish. However, by the time the day was over start to finish it was over 14 hours. In hind sight, I believe we took too much time at each hotel stop when picking folks up that was unnecessary. It appears the time got away from the driver and we even changed lunch plans when we heard that we wouldn't get back untl after 8 PM. That took away from the trip. We were so exhausted when we got back to the hotel.

James needs to understand his history a little deeper, a little over-the-top as pro-indian and no effective balance. Really enjoyed the tour though,

Amazing tour guide - so informative and passionate! Spent so much time at the valley and drove the 17 mile off-road track through it. Took stunning photos! Lunch was good too with a great view of the valley. Was picked up right on time in Flagstaff in an air conditioned minibus of 8 people.

Our driver, Cory, was incredible! He gave information on anything we saw on the tour, from animals, vegetation, history, Native American culture, weather, jewelry, and anything else. Not only intelligent, he was pleasant and good-natured. It was the best day of our vacation.

All I can say is WOW! Unbelievable scenery. It is a long ride but well worth it. The only down side was the Santa Ana's. Very windy at times.

This tour was not what I expected. It seemed to be mainly a shopping expedition at the rest stops. The scenery was beautiful but we thought we would be visiting a Navajo house and learning about their culture: not visiting them at work.

annalisa p, Oct 2012
too expensive only for the valley, not clear that the trip is just at themonument valley. If you expect to see an indian reservation, well...you will just drive through land, you will not meet or visit indians villages, and you will meet indians just in the shops in the valley. Wonderful landscapes, but no indian reservation in this trip.

Kim S, Sep 2012
Unfortunately we had a lot of rain, but we did get to see the "monuments". The driver scared the **** out of us as he was driving wrecklessly - reading his notes as he was driving, driving too fast and not paying attention to the road. We were glad to arrive home safely. Driver spoiled it for us

Claudette H, Sep 2012
The driver was knowledgeable about both the Navajo Nation and the land. The trip was long and it rained very hard the whole time we were there, so it was a red muddy mess! But he was determined that we would see some of the monuments and get pictures.
