What To Expect

Board your climate-controlled minibus and relax on the journey inland to Pompeii. Once you arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage–listed archaeological digs, meet your guide and head off on a tour to discover Pompeii’s highlights.

As you explore, learn about the destructive volcanic eruption of AD 79 that buried the ancient city for centuries. The ash and molten lava that streamed out of Mt. Vesuvius preserved the town remarkably, and many original landmarks can be found around the site. See the old public baths, the Macellum (market), and the Temple of Jupiter, and hear about their history from your guide.

After a break for lunch at your own expense, continue with a drive up the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. Stretch your legs on a short hike up to the crater’s lip and learn about the infamous volcano from a mountain guide. Make use of some free time to gaze out over the Bay of Naples, then return to your transport for the drive back to Sorrento.

Once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city, Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Wear closed toe shoes as the terrain is loose and dusty.

Try to do this in the spring or fall, as the heat can get quite uncomfortable, especially in Pompeii.

The hike to Vesuvius can be tough if you are expecting, elderly, or have any sort of medical/physical constraints, but it is well worth it for the views and memories.

Our tour guide was amazing. You could tell she knew exactly what she was talking about and not just spouting off something memorized. Easy to book and the meeting spot was easy to find. Bus trip was filled with interesting facts on the region. Before the Pompeii tour there was time to use the restroom. Our Pompeii Guide was knowledgable and easy to listen to. Can't imagine visiting the site without a guide there would be so much that would be missed as the city is a labyrinth. Lunch could be on your own or with the pre-purchased group. Bus ride to Pompeii made a side stop to try limoncello at a cute little shop. Entertaining and fun. Pompeii was a good hike and we were well cued to difficulty and length. Not all that impressive as it looks like a huge crater, but when you think that it is a volcano and the story behind it, it takes on a new meaning. We travel by public transportation when we are in Europe and can navigate getting to places on our own, but being on a tour like this is a luxury. Well worth the money to get to the front gate easily(both sites), utilizing your time to get the most out of the day.

Great tour of Pompeii, guide was excellent. She showed us many different areas and described the way people lived back then. Her explanations were clear and informative. Mount Vesuvius was interesting. The walk up was steep. We are glad to have seen it. The bus driver did an excellent job navigating the narrow and winding roads.

Great day, excellent friendly guide with lots of information. Meeting point easy to find. Wear trainers, it’s a full on day of walking and the hike up to the top of Vesuvius ( just under 30 Mins at a slow walk)whilst worth it, is pretty steep on places but Lots of time given to get up and down again. Would recommend as you really need a guide in Pompeii.

Great tour and company was flexible. I was supposed to do Pompeii and Vesuvius climb but I wasn't feeling well so they switched me to just the half day Pompeii. Pompeii was amazing but there's so much to see I wish I was there longer! Wear comfortable shoes. Lots of walking and uneven surfaces. Be careful walking, it would be easy to fall. I helped an elderly couple in our group walk as it's a challenge for those with reduced mobility.

Very easy & informative if a little abridged. Guide & bus were great. Pompeii was a zoo. Mt. Vesuvius was worth the hike. First part was the steepest & mostly wide enough for a car, until the end part which was narrower. Three stores/bars to use as goal setting spots.

My wife and I had two days in Sorrento, to get the most out of our time in the region we choose to take a day tour of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. The meeting point for the tour was a short distance from our Hotel in the center of Sorrento. The check-in was easy and the staff was friendly and helpful. The tour started with a short walk to a state of the art tour bus that was clean, equipped with comfortable seats, and air conditioning. Our tour guide Desiree was a native and with great insights and was knowledgeable of the history. Our bus driver made us feel safe in the unapologetic Italian roads. The first stop was Pompeii and it was breath taking. We were glad that we wore comfortable shoes and clothes, since the Pompeian streets are all cobble stone and we did a lot of walking. Before leaving Pompeii we had an opportunity to have lunch at the local restaurants; Pizza, Pasta, Pastries also known as triple P. Next we made our way to the top of Mt. Vesuvius. The bus took us up the majority of the way. To reach the volcanic crater we hiked up an intense trail for about 20-30 minutes. The amazing views of the surroundings on the way up give you a great excuse to take a break and catch your breath. Once we reached the top we were glad we made the effort. This was an amazing experience that will live forever in our memories and videos!
