This was an absolute highlight. Visiting a new part of the world on vacation is always fun, as is experiencing the culture and food - but to be able to spend some time with a local family in their home, was truly a wonderful blessing and not something we have been able to do before. The Alagna family were a delight to be around. Maria Rita’s patience in teaching me to make cannolis was extraordinary and hilarious. And a great big thank you to Giacomo for the continuous translation! Enjoying food with family is common ground and transcends any language barrier. Would give this ten stars if we could.

Cooking with Gilda

The best day of our visit to Siracusa was spent with Gilda and her family in their outdoor kitchen cooking a fabulous meal. We started at the market where she has many friends among the vendors. Together we prepared delicious deep fried baby codfish balls. Next we cooked a sauce for her homemade pasta with swordfish, eggplant and tomatoes. The main dish was a baked swordfish steak. Gilda explained that these recipes are traditional dishes in the Siracusa region that her family has cooked for generations. She also showed us the tools she uses for homemade pasta, some of which belonged to her grandmother. Gilda is a very creative cook whose passion is cooking and meeting people from around the world. Thank you, Gilda, for a unforgettable cooking experience!
