Overview

While many tours in Iceland make pit stops at glaciers—the country is, after all, full of them—fewer take you over them and close enough to discover their interesting features. With this tour, take an easy glacier hike to see ice formations, crevasses, and water cauldrons that you’d miss just stopping for a look. Your climbing crampons are provided, and the guided hike is offered 2-3 times a day so it’s easier to fit into your schedule.

    Please be at location 20 minutes before departure. Meet us at our base at Sólheimajökull Parking Lot. Driving time from Reykjavík is 2.5 hours. Drive along Road 1 on the South Coast, then take a left turn on Road 221. After ca. 5 minute drive, you will reach the starting point.

End point

  • Not wheelchair accessible
  • Please bring good, hiking shoes (high on the ankle), warm and waterproof clothing, hat and gloves.
  • A small amount of walking is involved (about an hour on the glacier itself, with multiple stops)
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • Minimum age is 8 years
  • Most travelers can participate
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 14 travelers

  • For a full refund, you must cancel at least 24 hours before the experience’s start time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.

Glacier Hike

Josh was a great tour leader, our group was divided into two groups. Each group was 7 to 8 people so good ratio of leader to participants. One group wanted to go further on the glacier at a faster pace without photo stops and our group went a bit slower, took photos, had time to ask questions and learned some interesting information.

We had a nice experience on our glacier walk. Our guide Javier was very knowledgeable and gave us great insight into the glaciers and unfortunately how they are shrinking and melting fast. It’s now a 20 minute walk to the glacier instead of it being right next to the parking lot. I don’t have much faith that we will get our act together to reverse course and recommend experience a hike before they melt

This was an AWESOME experience! They take great care of you so don’t be nervous. It’s so fun to use the crampets and axes and walk on the glacier to see the views. Javier was very patient with our group and shared good info.

Amazing landscape, patient and informative and unrushed experience provided by our guide Glacier. He made us feel very safe and helped take photos for us, thank you. Nice leisurely hike up the glacier, crossed some crevasses, got to go near some caves and watched some ice climbing. Great morning out

Because of bad weather we tried to postpone the hike. We could not find another date so we decided to go despite the rain and did not regret it. It was an exciting experiense, really unforgetable. We were also lucky to be accompanied by Josh our wonderful guide.

We had an amazing hike on Solheimajökull, the weather was really nice and our group was with a very experienced guide, Tomas. Our 3 children (10,12 and 14 years) really learned a lot about glaciers, seeing and hearing at the same time. I felt safe at all times, even when we were at the white part of the glacier, quite high up...

Ellie our guide was fantastic. We learned a lot and it was very scenic. Our children ages 9 & 11 also did the glacier hike and really enjoyed it.

Es war eine schöne Tour und der Guide war sehr nett. Wir hatten auch Glück mit dem Wetter. Allerdings ist die Beschreibung der Tour irreführend. Da steht etwas von 1 h Fahrt zum Gletscher usw, wir dachten wir sehen etwas das sonst schwer erreichbar ist, in Wirklichkeit geht man einfach nur vom Parkplatz zum Gletscher hoch, der Weg dauert vielleicht 10 min. Ich persönlich fand die Gruppe etwas groß, dadurch musste man oft warten (zb bis sich alle die Schneeschuhe angezogen hatten..) Sonst hätte man die Tour in 1,5 Stunden locker geschafft.
