What To Expect

Dressed appropriately for the cold, and wearing hiking boots, meet your guide and small group in Sólheimajökull parking lot at your scheduled time.

After a brisk walk, arrive on the glacier and take in the sight of the millennia-old blue ice while your guide sets you up with all necessary equipment. Led by your experienced guide, embark upon the walk of a lifetime across the compacted ice. Your guide adjusts the pace and level of difficulty according to the needs and abilities of the group. Relax, knowing you are in careful hands, as your guide explains all about the formation of the glacier and how it is changing.

Take the time to soak up the eerie quietness and sense of isolation as you stand atop the glacier tongue. On a clear day, admire the view of the ice cap-covered volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which famously brought European air traffic to a halt when it erupted in 2010.

Definitely go, just not with Troll Excursions!
Matthew_F, Mar 2023
Great experience but absolutely do NOT recommend Tröll Excursions. We paid for a 3 hour trip and were there and back in less than 2 hours. When we questioned this we were met with a rude and patronising guide, even though other groups spent twice as long on the glacier as we did. Book with someone else!
Awestruck

The experience was amazing. Totally eye opening first hand experience of climate change. A definite must if in Iceland.
Amazing experience!

An amazing experience!! The guide was brilliant - really calm, helpful, knowledgeable and safe. The glacier is like nothing I’ve ever seen! Highly recommend this is top of your list of activities in Iceland :)

My friend and I had a great time hiking the glacier with Katerina! Luckily the rain held off and we enjoyed the view from atop the glacier.

Challenging and worth it
Wayne_R, Sep 2022
Physically challenging but worth the effort. Blue ice, volcanic ash, caverns and crevices. Our guide, Kevin was very helpful. I grew up on a farm in the Us carved out by glaciers. Seeing is understanding.
Great hike, unique experience. Definitely would do again.

Our guide was amazing! Lots of knowledge about the glacier and answered all of our questions. Very friendly. Only advice is that the trail is more challenging than a typical hike. Eat a good breakfast and bring lots of water. 10 out of 10 in terms of enjoyment

Good time hiking glacier
Andrew_B, Jul 2022
It was a fun hike on a glacier. They provided all the gear. You do need to be in decent shape for the hike and prepared to be out hiking for a few hours. But it isn't very strenuous and if you looking for an extreme activity, this is not it. Our guide was very professional.
Coolest thing ever
Lauren_K, Jul 2022
Our guide was super nice and very informative. She was very willing to take pictures for everyone and we even got to drink the glacier water! Delicious.
Sunny adventure on a sunny glacier with a sunny guide. 🔆

It was a special experience, to walk on a glacier. You felt so little among these big iceblocks. Good job did the guide, a smile on her face and a lot of information.
Great. must do.

We had a very nice guide. Who made the trip extra, cause he was funny and well informed. The trip is possible for everyone. You don’t need to be super sporty.
10/10 recommend! Beautiful Views
Cara_W, Feb 2022
Amazing hike, beautiful views! 10/10 recommend, ended up being our favourite thing we did in Iceland. They provide crampons which make walking on the ice easy, no hiking experience needed but do recommend having a good general fitness level as it can be a steep climb.
One of the highlights of our trip!
Catherine_E, Dec 2021
My 24 yr old son and I hiked the glacier with Benat and 4 other guests. Benat was cool, calm, and full of information which put us at ease right away. It was surreal when we finally stopped halfway up and looked back to see how far we had come. I felt pushed beyond my comfort zone and it was exhilarating! Those crampons they provided were magical. This experience was so much more than we expected. I mean, how do you go to Iceland and not hike a glacier?!! I would highly recommend this hike.
More of a tour than a hike.
Charlotte_B, Dec 2021
The glacier is beautiful and well worth the visit. The tour was more of a tour than a hike, we expected to go further onto the glacier and walk further to explore more. It took almost an hour for everybody to get ready and then once we were on the glacier the groups were all backed up so there was a lot of waiting around. I’m not sure I’d describe them as small groups either, I think there was 10 in our group. They should group fitness levels together and ask people what they want to explore. We would have liked to go further and experience more of a hike, this was a stroll on the glacier, which will definitely suit some people! Our guide was really friendly and knowledgable. We went on the afternoon tour, I think the morning/lunch time tour would be better.
